Sunday, September 20, 2015 , Entomology Study Group ( KSE ) Faculty of Biology conducted sampling ( sampling ) of water insects and macrozoobenthos along the River Winongo DIY . This activity is carried out as one of the major activities of the Community in Winongo River cooperate with Entomology Study Group which aims to determine the water quality of the River Winongo DIY. Half of the active members of Entomology Study Group participated in thic activity, totaling 32 person accompanied by 1 KSE alumni, divided into 7 for 7 sampling points along the river.
“Because insects are everywhere, either in the flow of river. Young entomologist let’s get down to continue working!” Silmi gave spirit, he is one of the younger members of KSE in this activity.
Sampling point 1 located in Girikerto , Turi , Sleman . The location is in the neighborhood of thorny palm estate, around the river is a sedimented rock cliffs but the topography of canopied river. Ambient air is fresh , the water flow of the river is not too heavy and still clear because it is still very rare of sewer population.
Sampling points 2 located in Jombor , Mlati , Sleman which is canopied river Topograph. In the eastern part of the river there is vegetation of bamboo , liana , banana tree , and fern that lined the outskirts of the river flow. West side of the river is vegetation of ferns and some water hyacinth. On the banks of the river is a pile of residents garbage so make the rivers water quite murky and a bit smelly.
Sampling points 3 located in Bener , Sleman (near SMAN 2 Yogyakarta). River condition is dirty and stench because many homes drain the waste into the river. Beside, there are also activities of people such as fishing , bathing , and defecate . The flow of the river is quite heavy because the surface in the form of a derivative, just few tree beside the river and the river is not canopied.
Sampling points 4 situated at the Serangan , Yogyakarta (near SMAN 1 Yogyakarta ) , precisely under the bridge Serangan . The flow of the river is very close to residential , quiet water looks clear , the substrates looks dark . On the river bank are overgrown wild plants such as spinach . Along the body of river seen so many piles of household waste, such as the remnants of foodstuffs , plastic wrap , and many sewer pipes that flowed into the river body.
Sampling points 5 located near Niten Market , Bantul. Substrates in the river is quite diverse, there is a lot of garbage on the banks but the community diligently clean , “When we arrived at the location , we see citizens being worked together to clean the river . The positive side is that the river looks clean, to prevent flooding . However , when people get into rivers and streams became turbid surface , then macroozoobenthos contained in becomes difficult to find. “Said Nu’man, member of KSE.
Sampling points 6 located in Sumberharjo , Bambanglipuro , Bantul . Sampling sites located in the neighborhood of rive, sugarcane farming and village . Vegetation around the river filled with bamboo. The river water is grayish to dark green and smelly because people around throwing garbage into the river. River substrate covered with fine fabrics and other household utensils . It is found a lot of mounds of garbage in the river, even worse found slaughter chickens waste in the river flow .
Sampling points 7 located under the bridge of Samas Beach. Location sampling are substrate dominated by mud and rocks slightly, with the current flow of the river were very quiet. River is deep enough because the downstream, reaching a depth of 100 cm. River is not canopied, and water is green.
Sampling began at 10:00 to 14:00 pm conducted in 5 segments from downstream to upstream in each region of the sampling point . In each segment , the sampling carried out for 1 minute . Before sampling , team performed measurement of environmental parameters , such as the depth and width of the river , the water flow , flow velocity , topography of rivers , streams coordinates . Sampling performed by using aquatic net , the selection of water insects and macrozoobenthos using the tray and brush , magnifying when needed . Temporary sample storaged in a flakon bottle filled with adequately formalin and then labeled for each segment of the sampling point.
“Benefit of this activity is for many people, for KSE itself could deepen the science of aquatic insects and knowledge in sampling methods, and for community Winongo River DIY, this activity helps community in controlling the quality of the river, and the data obtained can be used by the public.” Said Putri, member of KSE in this activity.
Water insect and macrozoobenthos sampling results are collected, then later identified. This activity is carried out 2 times a year, during the dry season and the rainy season.
“Thanks to the Community Winongo River which has been offering activities in the form of this cooperation. Very beneficial activity for us, hopefully will be continously mutual contact” said Amelia, KSE river project coordinator. (amp2013)
