The Study Programe of Doctor in Biological Sciences (SP-DB) is one of the four degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Officially established on 20 September 1993 through the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 580/DIKTI/Kep/1993, the programme is designed to provide advanced doctoral education with a strong emphasis on tropical biology. It aspires to become a centre of excellence in higher education, research, and community service in the field of biology, while upholding the values of Pancasila and contributing to both national development and global scientific advancement. . This Goals was in line with the vision and mission of Faculty of Biology UGM (https://biologi.ugm.ac.id/en/vision-and-mission/). To Embody the vision and mission of SP-DB (Vision, Mission, Objectives, Targets, Competencies, and Learning Outcomes – Fakultas Biologi).
The curriculum of the SP-DB is structured to develop strong competencies in independent research, critical analysis, and scientific communication. The programme offers two pathways: a Regular Track, which includes more structured courses to strengthen theoretical foundations, and a By Research Track, which places greater emphasis on independent research. Both tracks require a minimum study load of 46 credits (181.6–184.4 ECTS) and consist of Compulsory Programme Courses, Dissertation Supporting Courses, and Dissertation Group Courses. Courses are carefully designed to support the students’ dissertation work and to align with the programme’s vision and objectives.
Graduates of the SP-DB are expected to play a significant role in advancing science and society. They are prepared to become independent researchers, scholars, and educators, capable of producing innovative research in tropical biology and related fields. In addition, graduates are equipped to contribute as policy advisors, consultants, and leaders in academic, governmental, and industrial sectors, as well as innovators who can transform biological research into applications that promote biodiversity conservation, biotechnology, and sustainable development.
The SP-DB is distinguished by several key strengths:
- A strong focus on tropical biology, addressing biodiversity, conservation, ecosystem sustainability, and biotechnology.
- International collaborations with leading universities and research institutions, providing opportunities for global academic networking.
- Access to state-of-the-art research facilities, including modern laboratories, field research stations, and extensive collections of tropical biodiversity.
- Guidance from experienced supervisors with expertise across diverse fields of biological sciences.
- Integration of education, research, and community engagement, ensuring that research outcomes address real-world challenges.
Through its strong academic tradition, cutting-edge research, and international outlook, the Doctoral Study Programme in Biological Sciences at UGM prepares graduates to address the challenges of the 21st century ranging from climate change and biodiversity loss to the need for sustainable biological innovation.
