1.     BACKGROUND

In response to the nation’s problems, Faculty of Biology Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) proposes programs as an attempt to enhance the nation competitiveness through transfer of knowledge, skills, and experiences to community with the involvement of our excellent students, graduates, and staff members. To sustain tropical biodiversity resources, we will develop both formal education system and community services through Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE)-Yogyakarta based on Education for Sustainable Development (EfSD). Our formal education system will focus on conservation and utilization of biodiversity, especially natural orchids as a model organism. Since 1976 our late Professor Moeso Suryowinoto had concerned in orchid researches at Faculty of Biology UGM. These researches focused on identification, cultivation, tissue culture, and breeding of natural orchids. Based on the results of these researches, we continuously improve the researches that since 2002 we have been creating genetic modified orchid plants. Several natural orchids that we have studied are including Phalaenopsis amabilis (moth orchid), P. amboinensis, Vanda tricolor (Pandan orchid), Dendrobium fimbriatum, Coelogyne pandurata (black orchid) and Gramatophylum scriptum (tiger orchid). These orchids are almost classified as endangered species. Therefore, the effort to conserve them is paramount important to be conducted.

At present, the studies are focusing on P. amabilis, as this species was elected as Indonesian “Puspa Pesona” in 1992, due to its artistic, aesthetic characters, and its long lasting flowers. Regularly, we train society to cultivate and breed orchid for agribusiness purpose. Some of the owners of orchid nurseries namely Royal Orchids, Handojohardjo Orchids, Sien Orchids, Edward and Frans Orchids in East Java, and Felis Orchids in Yogyakarta are excellent graduates of our orchid training programs. Until now, we still keep in with them on both scientific and business purposes. In 2002, we had collaboration with the Royal Palace of Yogyakarta and PAI (The Indonesian Orchid Association) Yogyakarta t
o host the International Orchid Conference and Exhibition in Yogyakarta (Indonesia Orchid Show). In order to improve the quality of orchid, we also have collaborative research with Nagoya University-Japan and Chubu University-Japan for quality improvement of natural orchids. This collaboration work has been recognized as a winner in Nagoya International Orchid Show 2009.

Currently, we have succeeded to study, conserve and utilize natural orchids. We are capable to produce massive orchid seedlings, so that we can work together with the farmers to prevent the extinction of orchids. Regarding to the natural orchids, we still have problems on producing seeds, seedlings, and high quality hybrid. These problems can be solved by conducting training for farmers to conserve both in-situ and ex-situ of natural orchids.

Through this grant we will develop demonstration plots for the orchid, which are very important, not only for stakeholders and farmers, but also for our students. The students and farmers will gain knowledge and experiences in managing biodiversity from the interaction between the University and farmers. To achieve better quality of natural resources of tropical biodiversity, the Faculty of Biology calls for research proposal on tropical orchids in all fields.

2.     OBJECTIVE

The objective of our programs is to enhance staffs and graduate students’ capability in conducting integrated collaborative research.

3.     SCOPE AND COVERAGE

To solve the problem, staffs and graduate students’ capability on integrated-collaborative research will be improved through engagement in an integrated-collaborative research grant on tropical orchids for five (5) grantees in 2010.
