One of the students at the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Nata Dwi Annisa Nizma, has participated in The 5th International Conference on Biology, Science, and Education (ICoBioSe) 2023 which was organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) with the theme “Heading to SDGs 2045 through Bio-Technological Studies and Learning Based Approach”.
This activity was carried out on Thursday, 26 October 2023 online via zoom meeting platform. The event started at around 08.00 WIB with the singing of the national anthem and several opening speeches. This international conference presented several extraordinary keynote speakers who are experts in their respective fields, including Prof. Seiki Yamane from Kagoshima University Museum (Japan), Prof. Ari Widodo, Ph.D. from the University of Education Indonesia (Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Syakirah Binti Samsudin from Sultan Idris Education University (Malaysia), Dr. Yuni Ahda, S.Si., M.Si. from Universitas Negeri Padang (Indonesia), and Prof. Christophe Eizaguirre from Queen Mary University of London (UK). Parallel sessions were held in the middle of the event in several breakout rooms. Nata Dwi Annisa Nizma explained her presentation with the title “Association of Chicken Growth Hormone (cGH) Gene Polymorphism with the Growth of F5 Golden Kamper Hybrid Chicken”. This presentation is the result of thesis research that she completed together with her supervisor, Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc. Nata was very enthusiastic and contributed actively throughout the event, both in the main session and parallel sessions. She stated that the topics presented by the presenters were very interesting, especially the topic about Evolutionary and Conservation Genetics which was explained by Prof. Christophe because genetics is a field of science and attracts her attention for discussion. From this discussion, Nata learned how genetics could be a potential solution in sea turtle conservation efforts using a sex determination approach.
The event ended at around 16.00 WIB. Before closing, there was a closing ceremony session and awards were given to ICoBioSe 2023 participants. With her activeness and participation, Nata managed to get an award as best participant. He is grateful for the opportunity to take part in this international conference and hopes to gain knowledge and develop wider experience in future opportunities.
The “ICoBioSe 2023” activity discusses many of the latest innovations and research related to preserving life on land and sea in line with SDG 14 and 15. The active involvement of students in this international conference activity is a good bridge to increase insight in a broad spectrum. The Faculty of Biology UGM really supports their students to gain knowledge from various activities, especially conferences, because activities like this are a real implementation of efforts to improve the quality of education in line with SDG 4.
