Four UGM students received scholarships to join 2018 International Summer Course (ISC) on Advanced Marine Biology at Sugashima Marine Biological Laboratory (Sugashima MBL), Nagoya University, Japan, from July 13th to 17th, 2018. Those selected students are Basith Kuncoro Adji (Biology 2014), Anggun Cinditya Putri (Biology 2015), Putri Eky Pratiwi (Fisheries 2014), and Surono Dwi Saputra (Graduate student, Biotechnology 2017). This ISC program is an ongoing cooperation between the Faculty of Biology UGM and Nagoya University and has been going on for the last 4 years.

ISC at Sugashima MBL is a summer short course which held by Nagoya University, targetting undergraduate and graduate students who have strong interest in marine biology as participants. ISC 2018 was attended by 13 participants coming from several countries such as G30 program students with Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, India, and Mongolia nationality, and also NUPACE program students from Norway and France. Doctoral student from Kyoto University with the Philipines nationality and Post-Doctoral Fellow from Stone Brook University with the USA nationality also attended this summer course.

All participants had the opportunity to do marine exploration in the intertidal zone of Sugashima Island to collect marine invertebrates and learn basic taxonomy of collected animals. They also learnt the fertilization process and early development of Sea Urchins and Ascidians. Moreover, they were introduced and had the opportunity to learn molecular phylogeny analysis, genome editing techniques using TALEN, and proteomic analysis which are recent development in molecular biology. The courses were delivered by Professor and Director of Sugashima MBL, Prof. Hitoshi Sawada, and other instructors such as Dr. Lauren Stefaniak, Dr. Maki Shirae-Kurabayashi, and Dr. Yukinobu Isowa.

Through the 2018 ISC program, participants are expected to develop their abilities and skills to conduct marine biology researches especially in Indonesia, to broaden their international scientific relations among participants, and to learn various cultures around the globe. Moreover, it is also expected that this program will strengthen the cooperation between Faculty of Biology UGM and Nagoya University and be a milestone to do research colaboration in the future.

Earth Day 2018 Commemoration

HeadlineStudent Activities Thursday, 26 April 2018

Sunday, April 22, 2018. The Green Coalition (Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Agriculture, Instiper Jogja, IKAHIMBI) commemorates it by doing long march. The theme of the Green Coalition for the 2018 Earth Day commemoration is trash, because the problem of waste is still a scourge for the environment even until now. The Student Family of the Faculty of Biology is enthusiastic about the event. During the long march, students of the faculty of biology invite the community to dispose of the garbage in its place and distribute the tote bag to the surrounding community. Arriving at Tugu, the event is a speech from faculty representatives, signing petitions, voicing and inviting people to care about the environment by not littering the place, as well as entertainment from representatives of each faculty joined in the Green Coalition. From the faculty of biology, the speech was represented by the chairman of BEM, Lalu Gunawan Fadliansyah (2015), the entertainment was a reading of a poem by Nafi’atul Ummah (2017). The Earth Day event was closed with mannequin challenges.

On April 24, 2018, the Student Family of the Faculty of Biology commemorated the 13th anniversary of KMFB. The event was held in BAB “(Biology Dasar Atas Barat)” Faculty of Biology. the event started at 16.50-18.30. All the biology students who joined the KMFB follow the anniversary of KMFB with great enthusiasm. In KMFB Anniversary ceremony there was a tumpeng cutting represented by Ibu Rina Sri Kasiamdari and symbolically given to the representatives of Study Groups / Institutions to be more “erat dan solid”. The KMFB Anniversary was “dimeriahkan” by Biology Award 2018 nomination readings counted by voting. In the series of KMFB Anniversary event, Department of Medkominfo BEM Biology presents Bioskop (Biology in Telescope) as a video to commemorate the anniversary of KMFB. The event was then closed with taking photos together.

General Course of Dr. Stephan Immenschuh About The Role Of Stem Cell In Research And Clinic

HeadlineNews Release Tuesday, 13 March 2018

Faculty of Biology UGM has organized guest lecture with outstanding speaker, Prof. Dr. med. Stephan Immenschuh, from the Institut für Transfusionsmedizin Medizinische Hochschule Hannover Germany. This guest lecture was held on March 6, 2018 with the topic of Stem Cell Role in Research and Clinical Purposes which was attended by students, lecturers, and staffs of Faculty of Biology UGM. This activity has opened by welcoming marks by Dean of Faculty of Biology UGM, Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc.
The stem cell is an undifferentiated cell population that can renew itself and produce a new generation of highly specialized cells. Stem cell technology known as stem cells has been established since 1965 with the success of bone marrow transplantation in two immunodeficiency siblings. In subsequent years, there was an important event that marked the progress of stem cell technology in the field of clinics.
In addition, stem cell technology is evolving as gene therapy that can be used to treat hereditary immune deficiency diseases such as Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome and reprogramming adult cells into pluripotent stem cells involving induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Stem cells have the potential to become a common treatment for severe diseases such as hereditary ones, immune deficiency, heart abnormalities, and so on.
