Faculty of Biology UGM has organized guest lecture with outstanding speaker, Prof. Dr. med. Stephan Immenschuh, from the Institut für Transfusionsmedizin Medizinische Hochschule Hannover Germany. This guest lecture was held on March 6, 2018 with the topic of Stem Cell Role in Research and Clinical Purposes which was attended by students, lecturers, and staffs of Faculty of Biology UGM. This activity has opened by welcoming marks by Dean of Faculty of Biology UGM, Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc.
The stem cell is an undifferentiated cell population that can renew itself and produce a new generation of highly specialized cells. Stem cell technology known as stem cells has been established since 1965 with the success of bone marrow transplantation in two immunodeficiency siblings. In subsequent years, there was an important event that marked the progress of stem cell technology in the field of clinics.
In addition, stem cell technology is evolving as gene therapy that can be used to treat hereditary immune deficiency diseases such as Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome and reprogramming adult cells into pluripotent stem cells involving induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Stem cells have the potential to become a common treatment for severe diseases such as hereditary ones, immune deficiency, heart abnormalities, and so on.

Improving the quality of Indonesian Biologist, Faculty of Biology established a partnership with UMS and Poltekkes of Surakarta
Apart of developing education quality of students of UGM, Faculty of Biology as one of the best programs in biology and biological sciences leading pioneers in Indonesia also attempts to support the development of biology course at the other institutions. One of the efforts made by the Biology Faculty to implement the vision of the University is to establish a partnership with several other University alumni as well as teaching staff so that they could get the opportunity to study in the postgraduate program at the Faculty of Biology. After successfully working together with the Ministry of Religion to educate teachers in Madrasah and also educational programs for students of 3T (Terluar, Terdepan, Tertinggal), Faculty of biology initiates agreement with the University of Muhamadiyah Surakarta (UMS) and Poltekkes Surakarta.
“We want our graduate programs, Doctoral Program especially, in the Faculty of Biology continues to grow and is known more closely with its partners,” said Dr. Budi regarding to the outcomes of this cooperation.
In the UMS, the form of such cooperation is initiated between the Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc., with the UMS on 12 September 2017. This cooperation also gets good response by the Rector of UMS, Prof. Dr. Sofyan Anif, M.Si, who is also an alumnus of the Faculty of Biology. Moreover, the Faculty of Biology has also established close cooperation with the Poltekkes of Surakarta. In the Poltekkes of Surakarta, this form of cooperation is agreed upon both parties, including guest lectures, delegating lecturers from Poltekes Surakarta to take doctoral program related to herbal medicine at the Faculty of Biology.
“We expected that we will improve the number of students of the Doctoral Program, graduate school of the Faculty of Biology, both quantity as well as quality” stated Dr. Budi.
