Gentalk 1: Genetic Diversity of Mudskipper Fish Based on Mitochondrial Genes COI and 16S

Student Activities Wednesday, 6 March 2024

On Friday, March 1, 2024 at 13.00-14.30 WIB, Gentalk 1 was held. The event was held at the Genetics and Breeding Laboratory, Faculty of Biology UGM. The activity targeted towards Formasigen students and public. This activity was attended by Mrs. Ganies Riza Aristya, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. as the Formasigen supervisor lecturer. Gentalk activities are a forum for active discussion and sharing between alumni or seniors related to the topic of the undergraduate thesis being worked on with Formasigen students and the public. In the first Gentalk activity this year, there were 2 speakers. The speakers were Bernadetha Erdha and Delvira Sari. Both are students of the Faculty of Biology UGM class of 2020 and under the guidance of Dra. Tuty Arisuryanti, M.Sc., Ph.D. as their undergraduate thesis supervisor.

The event commenced with an opening by the MC, Thoriq Abdul Halim, the Head of the Scientific Division of the GenomCity 2024 Cabinet. Furthermore, there were remarks by the Formasigen supervisor, namely Mrs. Ganies Riza Aristya, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. From these remarks, Mrs. Ganies hopes that this Gentalk activity can be carried out regularly and get better in the future so that it can become a forum for knowledge for students of the Faculty of Biology UGM. The presentations began with Bernadetha Erdha discussing her undergraduate thesis research topic, titled “Genetic Diversity of Glodok Fish (Boleophthalmus pectinirostris Linnaeus, 1758) from Mangkang Mangrove Forest, Semarang, Central Java Based on Mitochondrial COI Genes”. Delvira Sari followed with her presentation on “Genetic Diversity of Glodok Fish (Periophthalmodon schlosseri Pallas, 1770) from Wonorejo Mangrove Forest, Surabaya, East Java Based on 16S Mitochondrial Genes”. Both presentations provided insights into the research stages undertaken by the speakers, including sampling, DNA isolation, amplification, electrophoresis, purification, DNA sequencing, and data analysis using various software tools. The event concluded with a question-and-answer session with the audience, followed by documentation. The successful implementation of the first Gentalk activity of the year sets a promising precedent for future sessions, serving as an engaging and informative discussion platform to showcase student research conducted under the guidance of lecturers at the Genetics and Breeding Laboratory, Faculty of Biology, UGM. The Grand Launching of the Tumbuh Kelana Cabinet of the Herpetology Study Group (KSH) 2024

On Saturday, February 17, 2024, The Grand Launching of the Tumbuh Kelana Cabinet of the Herpetology Study Group (KSH) took place at the Tropical Biology Auditorium from 09:30 AM to 12:00 PM, served as an introduction of the new cabinet for the 2024 term to KSH partners and the faculty advisor, Donan Satria Yudha, S.Si., M.Sc.. A total of 17 partners attended the Grand Launching, including 4K.Yogyakarta, KSHK FKH UGM, JMMB, KSB UAJY, GAMA Cendikia, Matalabiogama, BEM Biologi, KP3H, PMK, KMT, SEMA Biologi, UPII, Formasigen, KSE, KSAT, BIOSC, and FSC.


The event included the introduction of the new KSH cabinet for the year 2024 and a presentation of the work program planned for the term, followed by a question and answer session for all participants. The Grand Launching proceeded smoothly and concluded with a documentation session. It is hoped that the KSH work programs will be successful throughout the year and the relationship with partners will strengthen further.

The Grand Launching of the Student Senate 2024

On Monday, February 26, 2024, the Grand Launching of the Student Senate 2024 took place at the Tropical Biology Auditorium of the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada. The event was attended by Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, S.Si., M.Sc., as the advisor of the Student Senate, along with members of the Student Senate, representatives from Study Groups and Institutions.


The event was opened by Manika Rosalia Lysander and Salma Farah, followed by the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, the Universitas Gadjah Mada Hymn, and the Biology March. Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, S.Si., M.Sc. delivered the opening remarks, followed by a speech from Marfuah, the Chairperson of the Faculty of Biology UGM Student Senate. The event proceeded with presentations by the Student Executive Board (SEMA) regarding their planned work programs. The presentation began with an overview of SEMA’s work program for the upcoming year by Marfuah and Jovika Syifa Ananmaimuna, followed by presentations from each division. The Secretary, Irenna Sheva Zahrani, continued the presentation, followed by Naufal Irba Sahril presenting the budgetary work program. Denianto Agung Wicaksono then present the work program of Commission 1, followed by Muhammad Rafi Fairuza presenting the work program of Commission 2, and Asitya Fitri delivered the work program of Commission 3. The last two presentations were from the SEMA’s Honor Board and the Media and Networking Bureau, presented by Yunia Farkhamni and Huriyah Winda Nabillah, respectively. It hoped that the SEMA work programs will be successful throughout the 2024/2025 tenure. The event concluded at 17:30 with a closing session involving reflections, messages, and a group photo session.

The Grand Launching of Cabinet Magnolia of the Garden Architecture Study Group (KSAT) 2024

On Sunday, 25 February 2024 was held the Grand Launching of KSAT 2024, aimed to introduce the management of KSAT of the Faculty of Biology, also the current cabinet period. This event was held at Auditorium Biologi Tropika, invited 12 study groups in the Faculty of Biology as well as 5 organizations from various faculties, including IHMT (Association of Plant Protection Student), KMIT (Soil Science Students Family), ASC (Agritech Study Club), KMTA ( Association of Architecture Technique Students) and Forestation (Family of Forest Resource Conservation).


The activity commenced with an opening by MC, Laras Ati (KSAT 2023) and Farah Adina (KSAT 2023). Following the opening, the activities proceeded with an opening prayer and the singing of the Indonesia Raya, Universitas Gadjah Mada Hymne, and Biology March. Next, there was KSAT profile video viewing. The event continued with remarks from Anggi Nada (KSAT 2021) the chairperson of KSAT and Dyah Ekawati (KSAT 2021) the chief organizer of the event.

Subsequently, the event proceeded with the introduction of the Magnolia Cabinet by Anggi Nada (KSAT 2021), followed by an explanation from the KSAT chairperson. Next, there was an explanation of the work program starting with the vice-chairperson by Dyah Ekawati (KSAT 2021), general secretary by Kotimah (KSAT 2022), general treasurer by Mashanda Zahrah (KSAT 2022), scientific division by Laksita Chesarina (KSAT 2021), media and communication division by Dewi Nindya (KSAT 2022), creative division by Nabil Putra (KSAT 2022), entrepreneurship division by Johs Carlo (KSAT 2022), Human Resources Development division by Kamilia Hana (KSAT 2022), and household division by Mirmastu Lintu (KSAT 2022), this was followed by a Q&A session. Additionally, the Grand Launching event included an Ice Breaking session through games from the quizizz platform. This was followed by the delivery of messages and impressions by the invited guests. The event concluded with a closing prayer and documentation.

The Grand Launching of KSAT in 2024 proceeded smoothly and punctually. With the successful implementation of the Grand Launching of KSAT Biology UGM, it is hoped that external parties can deepen their understanding of KSAT Biology UGM. Furthermore, it is hoped that KSAT can take root firmly and penetrate civilization, becoming a study group that is beneficial both within the academic community and to the wider society.

The Work Meeting of The KSE Cabinet Entoanantara 024

Yogyakarta, on Saturday, 24 February 2024 Entomology Study Group (KSE) held a work meeting of the KSE cabinet entoanantara 2024 as well as launching of the new cabinet, aimed to introduce the new cabinet and discuss the work program of each division for one year administration. The event was held at room IV B, The Faculty of Biology UGM, took place from 08.00 WIB – 11.00 WIB and guided by Muhammad Syahrul Firdaus (KSE XXIV) and Fadhilla Eka Diannova (KSE XXV), and was attended by active members of KSE and representatives of the study groups in the Faculty of Biology UGM.


The event commenced with remarks from Sheva Rimma Dhanty, as KSE chairperson, and Drs. Hari Purwanto, M.P., Ph.D. as KSE advisor. Following that, all attendees sang Indonesia Raya, Universitas Gadjah Mada Hymne, Faculty of Biology Mars, and KSE Mars. The activity continued with presentation of work program of each division within KSE by each division head, namely research division, knowledge division, curriculum division, media and information division, network division, human resource division, entrepreneurship division, secretary division, treasurer division, and the last was the chairman who also explained the vision and mission, the philosophy of cabinet name and cabinet logo. The presentation of the work program was followed by a question and answer session for each division. The activity concluded with a documentation.

Cabinet Grand Launching, Family Gathering, and Festivities of BiOSC 18th Anniversary

On Saturday-Sunday, February 24-25, 2024, Biology Orchid Study Club (BiOSC) organized three consecutive events: the Work Meeting, Anniversary Celebration, and the BiOSC 2024 Fellowship Night. On Saturday (24/02), the activities commenced with opening remarks from the chairperson of BiOSC 2024, Prof. Dr. Endang Semiarti, M.S., M.Sc., as the advisor of BiOSC, and Sukirno, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., as the Head of the Undergraduate Biology Program at UGM. During this momentous occasion, congratulations were extended to BiOSC, which has dedicated 18 years as a platform for students interested in developing and exploring knowledge related to orchidology. Additionally, best wishes were conveyed for the success of the new cabinet in 2024. The event continued with a joint rice (Tumpeng) cone cutting ceremony, symbolizing the 18th anniversary of BiOSC, which was established on February 1, 2006. This was followed by the screening of congratulatory videos and wishes for BiOSC from active members and demissioners.

The subsequent event was the official Work Meeting, introducing the new Gastrodia Bambu cabinet for BiOSC in 2024. The meeting included the introduction of the management structure, strategic plans, cabinet direction, and the presentation of the daily management work plan by Bella Marcha, the Chairperson of BiOSC in 2024. The cabinet chose the Gastrodia bambu flower, an orchid holomycrotropic found on Mount Merapi, DI Yogyakarta, as its symbol. This flower symbolizes BiOSC’s sensitivity to the needs and dynamics of orchidology development, with the youthful spirits supporting the cabinet’s direction and commitment to making a positive impact on the surrounding community. This aligns with the 2024 strategic plan, focusing on strengthening the scientific knowledge of its members.

The presentation during the Work Meeting continued with the elaboration of the work plan by the daily management, starting with the Chairperson, Salma Dwiyanti as the Secretary, Ainu Lifah Windia Sari as the Treasurer, Akmal Bunyamin as the Knowledge Coordinator, Farhan Kesawa Mukti as the Research Division Coordinator, Anida Safriyani as the Cultivation Coordinator, Nindya ‘Aisyah Cahyaningrum as the Conservation Division Coordinator, Ristya Nadaa Shabrina as the Entrepreneurship Coordinator. This was followed by a question and answer session. The second session continued with the presentation of the work plan by Haris Dwi Nugroho as the Organizational Coordinator, Nadisya Putri Prihandini as the Head of PSDM Division, Sasi Dian Mutia Rahmawati as the Head of Public Relations and Networking Division, Fadilla Nur Hidayat as the Head of Household Division, and Astrid Rayna Afandi as the Head of Media and Publication Division, followed by another question and answer session. The event concluded with the expression of hopes for the upcoming year from the participants, including active members of the Basic Training (Diksar) and guests, followed by a shared meal.

Following the Work Meeting and Anniversary Celebration, a Family Gathering in the form of Fellowship Night was held on Saturday (24/02) evening at Wisma Sejahtera 3 in Kaliurang. The Fellowship Night adopted the theme “BONITA: Exciting Bonding Trip with BiOSC (Bonding Seru Trip Bareng BiOSC)” The evening was filled with various interactive games serving as a warm introduction between active AD members and demissioners. This Family Gathering not only forged close relationships among the participants but also provided a platform to invigorate the spirit of togetherness in a positive and energetic environment. Through this activity, it is hoped that the bonds among BiOSC members will be strengthened, establishing a robust foundation for productive collaboration and unforgettable camaraderie in the future. Postgraduate Student Gathering (TAKSA) Even Semester 2023

On February 24 2024, the Postgraduate Student Society KMP) of the Faculty of Biology UGM held a Postgraduate Student Gathering (TAKSA) at the Tropical Biology Auditorium, Faculty of Biology UGM. The event aimed to strengthen the bond between postgraduate students, alumni, and lecturers at the Faculty of Biology UGM. Furthermore, this activity also serves to broaden perspectives and understand the continuity between the Master’s and Doctoral academic realms, and their continuation into the professional world after graduating from the graduate program at the Faculty of Biology, UGM.


The event started at 08.00 WIB, opened by the MCs Zakaria S.Pd. and Ni Kadek Dewi Permata Sari S.Pd. The offline remark was given by Alexander Tage S.Si. representing the chairman of the Biology KMP. Followed by online remarks by the Head of The Master in Biology Study Program, Dr. rer. Nat. Andhika Puspito Nugroho, S.Si. M.Si.

Subsequently, the event continued with a Talk Show guided by the moderator, Puji Lestari, S.Pd. The Talk Show featured inspiring speaker Basith Kuncoro Adji, S.Si., M.Sc., an alumnus of the Faculty of Biology UGM, who conveyed the balancing focus between academic and non-academic activities. He also shared insights into opportunities and challenges as a postgraduate student and his ongoing projects.

Next, there was a sharing session, where new postgraduate students were divided into groups based on their study interests and guided by KMP members. The sharing session provided a platform for new students to inquire about academic and non-academic activities in the postgraduate program. One participant, Nurul Hidayah S.Pd., said that during the discussion, there was a sense of camaraderie among students from different cohorts and study interest groups, gained valuable information about the academic activities, thus getting to know the academic community of the Postgraduate Program of The Faculty of Biology UGM better.

Following that, there was a laboratory tour activity, where participants toured Buildings A and B to get acquainted with the laboratories and the research areas covered in each laboratory. New postgraduate students were divided into groups, each accompanied by KMP members. During the laboratory tour, participants were also introduced to the library facilities in Building B, such as the Book Collection Room, Study Room, and Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) Room. After returning from the laboratory tour, participants were directed back to the Auditorium for a Q&A session regarding the tour activities. One participant, Ainun Mardiah S.Pd., asked about the differences between the Seminar Proposal course and the Comprehensive Exam.

The activities continued with intergroup games using the Quizizz ,a spin game, and a biology quiz game. The winner of the entire game round ends with the awarding of prizes. The closing of TAKSA ended with a prayer by Safril S.Si. and photo documentation.

Guest Lecture Two Professors from the University of Technology Sydney Discuss Research on Emphysema to Microbiome and Chlamydia Disease

Yogyakarta, 23 February 2024 – Faculty of Biology UGM held a guest lecture featuring two professors from the Faculty of Science, University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Australia, they are Professor Wilhelmina Huston and Distinguished Professor Alaina Ammit. The lecture took place in the Auditorium of Tropical Biology, Faculty of Biology UGM and was attended by more than 200 students and lecturers from the Faculty of Biology UGM.


The public lecture was opened by Tyas Ikhsan Hikmawan, M.S., Ph.D. and continued with an opening speech by Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc. as Dean of the Faculty of Biology UGM. He stated that the implementation of the guest lecture was part of the collaboration between the Faculty of Biology UGM and the Faculty of Science UTS. He also added that the double degree program collaboration with UTS will be realized in the near future so that students who are interested in pursuing study opportunities in Australia can prepare themselves.

Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, M.App.Sc as Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration and Alumni Affairs, who acted as guest lecture moderator, invited Prof. Wilia and Prof. Alaina to present their research.

Prof. Alaina gave a lecture entitled “Combating inflammation in chronic lung disease”. She introduced the Woolcock Emphysema Center where she works together with other researchers in overcoming Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) through early diagnosis, and better treatment.

Prof. Wilia then explained her research with the title “The reproductive tract microbiome and chlamydial disease”. She began her lecture with an explanation of Chlamydia trachomatis and its transmission. She also explained the role of each microbiome in the female organs in protecting the organs from infections including Chlamydia bacteria, as well as his research studying each microbiome using next generation sequencing.

The lecture closed with a question and answer session guided by Dr, Eko. Prof. Alaina and Prof. Willa showed the important role of a biologist in the medical field so that they can expand the potential output of biological research in improving the quality of health.

This public lecture was part of a collaboration between the Faculty of Biology UGM and the Faculty of Science, University of Technology Sydney. This collaboration also shows the Faculty of Biology’s commitment to expanding connections and collaboration with various partners to improve the quality of education, in line with its support for the Sustainable Development Goals for improving education and expanding cooperation (SDG 4 and 17), and of course improving community health and welfare better through renewable research (SDG 3).

The Grand Launching and Meeting of the JMMB UGM Period 1445-1446 H

On Sunday, February 18, 2024, the Inauguration of the Daily Management and Syuro Council (Supervisory Board) of the Congregation of Biology Muslim Student, Universitas Gadjah Mada (JMMB UGM), was held at the Al-Hayat Mosque, Faculty of Biology, UGM. The event was attended by Muhammad Ihsanuddin Al Abror, representing Dr. rer. nat. Abdul Rachman Siregar S.Si., M.Biotech, as the Trustee of JMMB UGM, representatives of the Study Clubs of the Faculty of Biology UGM, as well as representatives of the Campus and Faculty Da’wah Management at Universitas Gadjah Mada.


The activity was guided by the MC, namely Denianto Agung Wicaksono as the Staff for the Public relation and Media at JMMB UGM.The event began with a Working Meeting, where the Daily Management presented their annual work program followed by discussions as a forum for aspirations for all members of JMMB UGM 1445 H. The event continued with the Grand Launching of the cabinet, opened by the MC and followed by the recitation of Holy Quran by Rafli Nur Muhammad Fahrezi. Furthermore, reading of the Pledge of the Inauguration of the Daily Management and the Syuro Council of JMMB UGM, led by Muhammad Ihsanuddin Al Abror. After that was remarks from Muhammad Luthfi, the general chairman of JMMB UGM Period 1445-1446 H, continued with the Grand Launching of the “Ar-Rabbii’ud Daafi” Cabinet as the new JMMB UGM cabinet for the 1445-1446 H period.

The name “Ar-Rabbii’ud Daafi” means “Warm Spring”, where “Spring” symbolizes renewal and new spirit after the emergence of light, restoring JMMB as the center of Da’wah in the Faculty of Biology, and “Warm” symbolizes this resurgence accompanied by efforts to enhance brotherhood and religious guidance, making JMMB a comfortable and warm religious community and family. Now is the time for the dawn of revival with the warmth that is dreamed of as in the past. The warmth of the past means realizing Islamic brotherhood and providing a third home for all Muslim academics of the Faculty of Biology, UGM. This is in line with our Vision, which is to restore the function of JMMB as a center for the development of Islamic values for students of the Faculty of Biology, UGM (maintaining faith, piety, and Islamic brotherhood) and as an agent of Da’wah. The Grand Launching and Working Meeting were concluded with a forum for impressions and messages, as well as documentation.

Faculty of Biology Universitas Gadjah Mada Participates in Sakura Science Program at Yamagata University

Yogyakarta, Indonesia – February 19, 2024 – The Faculty of Biology at Universitas Gadjah Mada is participating in the Sakura Science Program hosted by Yamagata University’s Faculty of Sciences. Under the esteemed leadership of Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, M.Sc., Vice Dean of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, and Dr. Nur Indah Septriani, M.Sc., Coordinator of the International Undergraduate Program (IUP), Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada.


The delegation is poised to engage in a transformative experience focused on “Understanding Asian Biodiversity by Advanced Molecular Techniques.” Scheduled from February 16 to February 24, 2024, this program represents a collaborative effort between Universitas Gadjah Mada and Yamagata University, with Professor Jun Yokoyama, Ph.D., serving as the Person in Charge (PIC).

The delegation comprises 14 students, including 8 males and 6 females, who have eagerly embraced the opportunity to delve into the intricacies of Asian biodiversity and cutting-edge molecular techniques.

The program itinerary is as follows:

  • Day 1 (February 16): Snow Sightseeing – A captivating journey through the snow-covered landscapes of Yamagata, fostering camaraderie and appreciation for nature’s beauty.
  • Day 2 (February 17): Expert Lectures:
    • Professor Yutaka Miyazawa: Leading authority in Plant Physiology, providing valuable insights into the physiological processes governing plant life.
    • Professor Naoyuki Fujiyama: Esteemed expert in Entomology, unraveling the mysteries of insect diversity and ecology.
    • Professor Jun Yokoyama: Prominent scholar in Plant Systematics, elucidating the classification and evolutionary relationships of plant species in Asia.
  • Day 3 (February 18): Laboratory Works – Hands-on sessions focusing on DNA Isolation and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), essential techniques for molecular biology research.
  • Days 4-5 (February 19-20): Advanced Laboratory Work – Participants will engage in practical exercises including electrophoresis, sequencing, and constructing phylogenetic trees, enhancing their proficiency in genetic analysis.
  • Day 6 (February 21): Group Presentations – Delegates will collaborate to present their findings and insights gleaned from the laboratory sessions, fostering academic discourse and knowledge exchange.
  • Day 7 (February 22): Sightseeing and Museum Visit – A day dedicated to exploring the cultural heritage and historical treasures of Yamagata, providing a well-rounded educational experience.
Dr. Bambang Retnoaji expressed his enthusiasm for the program, stating, “This collaboration represents a significant opportunity for our students to broaden their horizons, deepen their understanding of biodiversity, and strengthen international ties in scientific research and education.” This participation underscores Faculty of Biology Universitas Gadjah Mada’s commitment to fostering academic excellence, global engagement, and scientific advancement in the field of biology. In addition, this collaboration is in line with the Faculty of Biology’s commitment to increasing cooperation for international recognition in accordance with its support for the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG 17 as well as improving the quality of inclusive and high-quality education (SDG 4) and competing with the best institutions in the world.
