OCEANS DAY 2023 : “Stop Plastic Waste Polluting The Sea!”

Sunday, 4 June 2023 Oceans Day 2023 was held by the Marine Studies Group of the Faculty of Biology UGM as part of their participation in World Ocean Day on June 8 and was attended by 56 members of Marine Study Group and 18 volunteers from Faculty of Biology UGM. Ocean Day 2023 has the theme “Stop Plastic Waste Polluting the Sea”  and comprised two main activities: a seminar and beach cleanup.

The Seminar began at 08.30 to 11.00 at the auditorium of Biology Tropika and was guided by Renisha Windy Puspita Sari (DXXII) and Ahmad Aris B. R. (DXXIII). The seminar began with a welcoming speech from Filda Mega AYU as chairperson of the committee and A. Najib Dhiaurahman , the chairperson of Marine Study Group. Then the seminar continued with a presentation on plastic waste management to reduce water pollution and its solution through marine biology by Tyas Ikhsan Hikmawan, M.Sc., Ph.D. followed by discussion.

The next series of activities was beach clean-up at Baros Beach which took place 13.00 WIB to 16.00 WIB. This beach cleaning activity is a volunteer activity carried out directly on the shores of Baros Beach, collecting scattered waste in the area and educating about marine waste management.

May the knowledge and experience that has been given at Oceans Day 2023 not stop at this event alone, but be accepted and implemented continuously by all participants , and shared with anyone. Eternal and unlimited, invincible and powerful, such is the ocean. Together, let’s save the seas from all damage and pollution because this can be a real action to protect future generations. PKM Coordination and Monitoring Meeting 2023

Friday, 7 July 2023, PKM Coordination and Monitoring Meeting 2023 was held online through a zoom meeting and was attended by 45 students. This event consist of 3 session, began with explanation about the timeline of PKM 2023 by representatives of the PKM Corner Biology committee, then followed by the sharing session from  Eri Dwi Suyanti (2020) the participants of PKM 2022 2nd winner for presentation on the PIMNAS 35 and continued for discussion.

In this meeting Eri shared about preparation at each stage of PKM after passing funding such as research implementation, documentation, filing logbook, fund usage and preparation for monitoring and evaluation. Furthermore Eri shared tips and tricks to pass to PIMNAS and so on.

This meeting was held to  support Biology Students who managed to pass funding at PKM 2023.

Exploring Biodiversity and Sustainability: Participants of the 6th International Summer Course on Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainable Development Conduct Intertidal Sampling at Pantai Porok

The 6th International Summer Course on Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainable Development held an exciting intertidal sampling event at Pantai Porok on August 10, 2023. The event commenced at 06:00 AM WIB, bringing together enthusiastic participants from around the world to engage in hands-on scientific research while experiencing the beauty of Indonesia’s coastal ecosystems.

Organized by the Faculty of Biology at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), this Summer Course aims to provide an immersive learning experience for young researchers, students, and enthusiasts interested in tropical biodiversity and sustainable development. This year’s program has attracted more than 60 participants from diverse backgrounds, fostering cross-cultural collaboration and knowledge exchange among various institutions, including UGM, UTHM, UTAR, UPLB, NTU, Chiba University, and Kasetsart University.

The intertidal sampling activity took center stage in this course, enabling participants to explore the unique ecosystem of Pantai Porok. Guided by experienced marine biologists and researchers, the participants collected samples and conducted field observations to understand the intricate balance of marine life that thrives in the intertidal zone. This hands-on experience not only exposed the participants to various species of marine flora and fauna but also emphasized the importance of preserving these delicate ecosystems for future generations.

This event is more than just a scientific endeavor; it’s a fusion of educational activities and recreation. The day prior to the sampling event, participants engaged in interactive games designed to foster teamwork and problem-solving skills. These games not only added an element of enjoyment to the course but also provided an opportunity for participants to forge new friendships and connections among the institutions represented.

The 6th International Summer Course on Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainable Development will continue with a series of engaging workshops, lectures, and field trips. The active participation of the attendees and their enthusiasm for learning underscore the success of the course in promoting awareness and understanding of the delicate balance between biodiversity and sustainable development.

BIORAMA 2023 (The BiOSC Social Sharing Activity)

On Saturday, April 15 2023, the BIORAMA or BiOSC Sharing Together activity was carried out at an orphanage in Yogyakarta, namely the Aisyah Orphanage on Jl. Munir, Serangan No. 109, Notoprajan, Ngampilan, Yogyakarta. This activity is one of the annual work programs under the Public Relations and BiOSC Network field carried out in the month of Ramadan. This year, BIORAMA’s agenda is distributing food aid and donation. The funds used came from opening donations on March 31 – April 13, 2023 so the total funds received were Rp. 2,067,000,-. The event was opened with remarks from the Head of BiOSC, Lisna N Aini, followed by remarks by the Chairperson of the Aisyiyah Orphanage, Mrs. Windah. She was grateful for the donation provided. The BIORAMA event was closed with a joint documentation session.

Field Class and Iftar with Architecture Landscape Study Club (KSAT) 2023

On Saturday, April 15 2023, a Field Class was held, followed by an Iftar. The activity is to increase Seedling’s knowledge and skills in implementing the Small Group Discussion 2 material that was presented a few weeks earlier. Field class activities in the form of materialization by the Plant Diversity Science Sub-Division and Landscape Ecology Science Sub-Division, as well as the implementation of SGD 2 material by the Landscape Architecture Science Sub-Division.

The first field class was delivered by the Landscape Ecology Research Sub-Division. The speaker explained about the interaction of abiotic factors with the environment and the procedures for using tools in making mini reports which included how to measure soil pH, soil moisture, and temperature in the UGM Biological Forest. Then proceed with the second field class by the Landscape Architecture Sub-Division, namely the implementation of designing a garden which includes site inventory and making notations on the base map. This was followed by the final field class by the Plant Diversity Science Sub-Division. The presenter explained about the growth form, macromorphological characters of plants, and the aesthetic value of a plant. After the presentation of the field class, it was followed by closing the field class and an explanation of the assignment.

After the field class activities were over, it was followed by iftar with all KSAT members. After that, the activity continued with the creation of content from the ten members who were selected to come forward bringing their own snacks. The activity continued with the exchange of snacks that had been brought between KSAT members. The joint opening activity ended with a closing prayer and documentation.

Spread the Love in PMK Biology Easter 2023

Every year the Christian Student Society (PMK) of the Faculty of Biology celebrates the Easter service with the aim of providing a place for Christian students and lecturers to celebrate Easter. This activity is also useful in developing Christian students’ spiritual relationships through joint fellowship. At this Easter celebration, PMK Biology carries the theme “Philadelfia” with the main verse on Hebrews 13:1-3. Through this theme, it is hoped that the brotherly love and friendship that God has given through humans can be channeled in the form of love for others, not only for those we know but for everyone according to the love of Jesus Christ.

This activity was held on Saturday, April 15 2023 at 17.00 – 19.00 WIB in Room 1-2 Building B, Faculty of Biology UGM. This activity was attended by Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, M.Sc. as Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Faculty of Biology UGM, Prof. Dr. Kumala Dewi, M.Sc.St. as PMK Biology supervisor lecturer, member of PMK Biology batch 2018 to 2022, representatives of PMK and KMKK UGM, and representatives from the Inter-University Fellowship – Yogyakarta Christian Student Society (PERKANTAS-PMKY).

This activity began with remarks by the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs and was followed by a celebration session and a prayer session. The celebration session was carried out in the form of Bible-themed games to bring each student closer and create an atmosphere of brotherhood, and was followed by praise through songs. During the worship session, the sermon was delivered by Ev. Fillia A. Laua from GII Hok Im Tong Cornerstone Jogja with the title “Maintain Brotherly Love”. The word that was brought about the extraordinary love of Jesus Christ became the basis for us to love others. Our love can be shown in the form of kindness, empathy, loyalty, and happiness. By carrying out this activity, it is hoped that we can increase brotherly love for everyone around us.

 

Family Gathering BiOSC 2023

On Saturday, April 29 2023, the BiOSC 2023 Family Gathering was held. This activity was part of the celebration of the 17th BiOSC Anniversary. This time the Family Gathering carries the theme IOS (Bonding BiOSC) with the jargon “Empower One Another”. This activity was attended by Prof. Dr. Endang Semiarti, M. S., M. Sc., as the BiOSC supervisor. In addition, this activity was also attended by 64 BiOSC members. In his remarks, Prof. Dr. Endang Semiarti, M.S., M.Sc. giving hope to BiOSC on this 17th Anniversary so that in the future it will be even more solid. Apart from that, he also hopes that BiOSC will be more responsive to the condition of orchids at UGM, especially at the Faculty of Biology.

To enliven the Family Gathering activities, each field with representatives from AD XVII made different performances. In addition to performances, in this Family Gathering activities various group games were also held. The BiOSC 2023 Family Gathering is very exciting and fun. Everything went smoothly. By holding the 2023 Family Gathering, it is hoped that it will strengthen the sense of kinship so as to create a harmonious relationship between BiOSC members

PKPA Labskill X: BiOSC Orchid Cultivation Technique Training 2023

On Saturday, April 1 2023, PKPA Labskill X for Orchid Cultivation Techniques was held at the Biotechnology Laboratory, Faculty of Biology UGM. This activity is a collaboration of the Research Division with the Cultivation Division of BiOSC. This activity was attended by Prof. Dr. Endang Semiarti, M.S., M.Sc. as BiOSC Supervisor Lecturer. Focusing on training and introducing basic material regarding in vitro orchid propagation techniques, this activity is intended to develop student abilities, especially in BiOSC membership. PKPA Labskill X Orchid Cultivation Techniques was successfully attended by 23 members from Diksar XV, XVI, and XVII BiOSC batches. This series of activities begins with a pretest for participants followed by guidance and direction regarding the basic material for in vitro culture of orchid seeds.

Next, participants were invited to practice sowing orchid seeds directly in Laminar Air Flow (LAF). The orchid seeds that were sown this time came from the Spathoglottis genus which came from the Karanggayan and Arundina Greenhouses which were obtained from the exploration results of BiOSC members. In this activity, participants will be taught the steps that must be taken, such as sterilizing tools and materials, preparing orchids for sowing, and how to properly plant seeds in a medium bottle using Vacin and Went medium. The steps in this method need to be considered carefully because it will determine the success of growing orchid seeds into new individuals. In this Orchid Cultivation Technique, participants are expected to have an overview and understand the basic techniques that need to be considered so that the cultivation of orchids from seeds can be successful.

Student Senate Workshop and Student Executive Board

Saturday, March 18 2023, the Student Senate (SEMA) Workshop was held with the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Biology UGM along with the ratification of the 2021 Faculty Student Representative Council Draft Law. This workshop is a meeting between SEMA and BEM with the aim is to submit the entire work program of each commission or department for one year of management period, namely the 2023/2024 service period. SEMA Biology carries the parliamentary name ‘Cakra Optima’ and BEM Biology carries the cabinet name ‘Laskar Aswattha’ in this year’s management period. This Workshop activity is open to the Faculty of Biology Student Society (KMFB), where representatives of three batches namely the 2020, 2021, 2022 and Study Groups/Institutions also attend and witness virtually.

This Workshop activity was carried out online through the Zoom Meeting platform with Nirina Adelia Putri as the Master of Ceremony. The activity started at 12.30 WIB with the agenda including the opening by the MC, remarks by Fathur Syahrian Ramadhani as chairman of the 2023 Biology BEM and continued by remarks from the chairman of the 2023 Biology SEMA namely Aqil Muhammad Hafiz, then continued with the Special Session for the Ratification of the 2021 DPM UF Bill, presentation by BEM, then presentation by SEMA, and finally closing.

From the presentations that have been delivered there are good suggestions from BEM to SEMA and from SEMA to BEM. These proposals can later be studied further and used as a basis if there are additions or changes to each work program that has been submitted. The workshop activity was then closed at 17.45 WIB and ended with an online photo session together

The XXIII Marine Study Club (KSK) Basic Education and Training

The series of Education and Training (Basic Education and Training), one of the XXIII KSK Biogama work programs, has been fully implemented offline in 2023. The series of KSK Biogama Education and Training activities consist of Outbound activities, Troop Deployments (gelar pasukan), and Field Training. Training XXIII aims to recruit potential new members and educate prospective cadres so they have the character needed in the organization. The XXIII Training has the theme: “Building competent, skilled and dedicated members of KSK Biogama to advance Indonesian maritime affairs”.

Outbound is one of a series of Basic Training Education (Diklatsar) events for prospective KSK Biogama members. In this event, participants consisting of 27 students received material from the committee at each post that had been placed. The material includes first aid, survival, making tents, making campfires, and learning sampling. The event was held on February 8 2023 at the UGM campus.

Troop deployment (gelar pasukan). In this event, participants consisting of 23 students made preparations for all the equipment and necessities that would be brought to the field training venue. Apart from that, in this activity the participants were also trained to built good tents so that they could be applied to field training events. This event was held on February 22, 2023 at Jalan Taman Biologi UGM.

Field training and inauguration are part of a series of Basic Training Education (Diklatsar) events for Biogama KSK member candidates. In this event, participants consisting of 23 students received field education for 3 days on 24-26 February 2023, by walking along Krakal Beach, Sarangan Beach, to Drini Beach, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta. prospective members of KSK were appointed as young members of KSK Biogama by the Dean of the Faculty of Biology UGM, Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc. who was accompanied by Abdul Razaq Chasani, Ph.D. as the Supervisor of KSK Biogama and A. Najib Dhiaurahman as the Chairman of KSK Biogama.
