Faculty of Biology UGM Strengthens International Network through Participation in Bio Summer Camp 2025 in Japan

Nara, 28 August 2025 — The Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), continues to expand its academic and research collaboration at the international level through its participation in Bio Summer Camp 2025, organized by the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan, on 26–28 August 2025 at the NAIST Campus in Nara.

In this program, Prof. Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, M.Sc., Professor at the Faculty of Biology UGM, was invited as a guest reviewer by NAIST. His presence aimed to share expertise, provide academic feedback to students, and open opportunities for research exchange between UGM and NAIST.

 

Bio Summer Camp 2025 was attended by first- and second-year doctoral students, second-year master’s students, as well as lecturers and researchers from NAIST. The program focused on training scientific communication skills in English, student research presentations in the format of an international academic conference, and discussion forums that encouraged opportunities for cross-border research collaboration.

 

In addition to the main agenda, Prof. Bambang Retnoaji also met with Prof. Dr. Yasumasa Bessho of NAIST to discuss plans for developing a double degree program between NAIST and the Faculty of Biology UGM. This meeting is expected to serve as an initial step toward strengthening more structured academic cooperation in the future.

 

On this occasion, Prof. Bambang also met with several students and alumni of the Faculty of Biology UGM who are currently pursuing further studies at NAIST. The meeting further strengthened academic networks while providing support to UGM students pursuing careers on the international stage.

 

The participation of the Faculty of Biology UGM in Bio Summer Camp 2025 carries strategic significance in strengthening UGM’s reputation in the fields of biology and life sciences. Beyond enhancing the international capacity of students through global academic exposure, the program also paves the way for broader research and educational cooperation between Indonesia and Japan, including the potential establishment of a double degree program in the future. In line with its commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this initiative contributes to improving the quality of higher education (SDG 4), strengthening global partnerships (SDG 17), and advancing research that supports good health and well-being (SDGs).

Faculty of Biology UGM and Eijkman BRIN Strengthen Collaboration in Molecular Biology and Genomics Research

Yogyakarta, August 27, 2025 – The Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), welcomed a visit from the Eijkman Molecular Biology Research Center, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) on Wednesday (27/8) at the KPTU Meeting Room, Faculty of Biology. The delegation was led by Elisabeth Farah Novita Coutrier, S.Si., Ph.D., Head of Eijkman Molecular Biology Research, accompanied by Farida Dwi Handayani, S.Si., M.S.


From the Faculty of Biology UGM, the meeting was attended by Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc.; Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni, Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, S.Si., M.App.Sc.; Head of the Office of International Affairs (OIA) UGM, Tyas Ikhsan Hikmawan, S.Si., M.S., Ph.D.; Secretary of the Office of International Affairs, Dr. Matin Nuhamunada, S.Si., M.Sc.; as well as staff members of the Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni Unit: Dhimas Willy Saputro, S.I.P., Annisa Mawarni, S.Si., and Anysah Nur Fauziyah, S.Si.

During the meeting, the Eijkman Molecular Biology Research Center, which is currently under the Health Research Organization of BRIN, presented its flagship research programs, including:

Pathogen Molecular Biology

Malaria and Vector Resistance

Pathobiology of Emerging and Vector-borne Diseases

Human Genetic Diversity and Diseases

Structural Biology and Cell Signaling

The visit aimed to initiate a research collaboration between the Faculty of Biology UGM, the Integrated Genome Factory (IGF), and the Eijkman Molecular Biology Research Center. The collaboration will focus on multi-omics approaches in pathogen research, targeting infectious diseases such as hantavirus, leptospirosis, and plague (PES), as well as other pathogens with the potential to threaten public health.

Dean of the Faculty of Biology UGM, Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, warmly welcomed this collaboration, emphasizing that the flagship programs of the Eijkman Molecular Biology Research Center are highly aligned with the research currently being carried out by lecturers at the Faculty of Biology. This synergy, he noted, represents a significant opportunity to strengthen collaborative research and scientific publications in molecular biology, health, and genomics.

This initiative is also in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being): advancing infectious disease research and developing genomics-based health solutions.

SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure): enhancing multi-omics research infrastructure and scientific collaboration.

Faculty of Biology UGM Initiates Collaboration with Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University Thailand

Yogyakarta, 25 August 2025 – The Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), welcomed a delegation from the Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. This visit marked the beginning of academic collaboration between the Faculty of Biology UGM and one of the leading universities in Thailand.


The Chulalongkorn University delegation was led by Professor Dr. Pranut Potiyaraj, Dean of the Faculty of Science, accompanied by Associate Professor Dr. Prasert Reubroycharoen, Dr. Inthawoot Suppavorasatit, Associate Professor Dr. Sehanat Prasongsuk, Assistant Professor Dr. Chompoonik Kanchanabanca, and Dr. Wuttichai Reainthippayasakul. The delegation was also joined by Dwi Kusuma Wahyuni, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga.

The delegation was received by Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, M.App.Sc., Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni Affairs, together with Dr. Nur Indah Septriani, Head of the Office of International Affairs of the Faculty of Biology UGM, and Dr. Matin Nuhamunada, Secretary of the Office of International Affairs of the Faculty of Biology UGM.

In his remarks, Dr. Eko expressed his appreciation for the visit, noting that the Faculty of Biology UGM had never previously established cooperation with Chulalongkorn University. He also introduced the faculty’s profile, highlighting its research strengths, international programs, and potential areas of collaboration.

Meanwhile, Prof. Pranut conveyed his enthusiasm for exploring opportunities with UGM. The discussion covered several potential collaborations, including student participation in the Graduate Student Conference alongside NUS and Mahidol University, joint research opportunities through invited researcher and adjunct professor schemes, the initiation of a double degree program with the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, as well as scholarship opportunities for UGM postgraduate students.

Representing the Faculty of Science, The University of Melbourne, were Professor Willa Huston, Associate Dean for Global Engagement; Holly Wright, Recruitment Officer; and Riyantisa Fikautsara, Chief Communications Officer of The University of Melbourne in Indonesia.

The discussion centered on the Indonesia Partnership Proposal, which outlines several dual degree schemes, including:

  • Master of Food Science 1+1 Dual Degree

Faculty of Biology UGM and Leipzig University Initiate Doctoral Double Degree Program

Abdul Rahman Siregar, M.Biotech, paid an official visit to Leipzig University, Germany.


During a meeting with the Faculty of Life Science, Leipzig University, both institutions discussed the initiation of a Double Degree program at the doctoral level, linking UGM’s Faculty of Biology with Leipzig University’s Faculty of Life Science. The meeting was attended by Prof. Ahmed Abd El Wahed and Prof. Uwe Truyen from the Institute of Animal Hygiene and Veterinary Public Health, Professor Dr. Marc Schönwiesner as Dean of the Faculty of Life Science, and representatives from Leipzig University’s Office of International Affairs.

This program is expected to serve as a strategic step to expand international academic networks, enhance the quality of education and research, and strengthen UGM’s role in advancing integrated knowledge in education and biodiversity-related research. Faculty of Biology UGM Strengthens International Partnership with Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) through Dual Degree Program Initiative

Pagoh, Malaysia – The Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), conducted an official visit to Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) to discuss the implementation of a Dual Degree program at the undergraduate level (Bachelor of Science) between the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology (FAST), UTHM and the Faculty of Biology UGM. The visit took place from July 24 to 28, 2025, at Pagoh Branch Campus, UTHM, Malaysia.


The UGM delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, S.Si., M.Sc., Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, and accompanied by two staff members from the Office of Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni (P2MKSA), Anysah Nur Fauziyah, S.Si., and Annisa Mawarni, S.Si.

An intensive three-day curriculum matching session was held from Thursday to Saturday, July 24–26, 2025. This process was crucial to ensure compatibility in course structures, credit loads, and learning outcomes, which are essential for the effective and equitable implementation of the dual degree program.

In addition to curriculum alignment, the discussions also involved drafting the content of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), which will serve as the legal foundation for the collaboration. Finalizing the MoA marks a strategic step toward establishing a strong administrative and operational framework for the dual degree program. With agreement reached on both the curriculum and the MoA content, both institutions are optimistic that the program can commence in the upcoming academic semester.

The visit concluded with an official meeting on Monday, July 28, 2025, between the UGM delegation and the leadership and academic staff of FAST-UTHM. The meeting was attended by: Assoc. Prof. Ts. The Faculty of Biology UGM and FAST-UTHM have maintained a strong partnership since 2018, collaborating annually through various international activities such as student mobility programs, the International Conference on Biological Sciences (ICBS), the International Conference on Biodiversity (ICB), and the International Summer Course.

FAST-UTHM expressed strong enthusiasm for this collaboration, highlighting the shared academic vision and focus on life sciences as well as the mutual commitment to strengthening internationally recognized education.

Leipzig University and UGM Faculty of Biology Explore Research and Dual Degree Collaboration

Yogyakarta, 10 July 2025 – The Faculty of Biology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) welcomed a visit from academics of the Institute of Animal Hygiene and Veterinary Public Health, University of Leipzig, Germany. The delegation, consisting of Dr. Ahmed Abd El Wahed and Prof. Uwe Truyen, was warmly received by the leadership of the Faculty of Biology UGM during a meeting held at a local restaurant in Yogyakarta.


The visit was officially hosted by Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, Dean of the Faculty of Biology, accompanied by Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, M.App.Sc. (Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Alumni), Dr. Matin Nuhamunada, M.Sc. (Secretary of the Office of International Affairs), and Dr.rer.nat. Abdul Rahman Siregar, M.Biotech. (Head of the Microbiology Laboratory).

In his remarks, Prof. Budi expressed appreciation for the strong relationship that has developed between the Faculty of Biology UGM and Leipzig University, especially through collaborations in research, training, and the organization of the International Summer Course. The visit also served as an opportunity to personally greet ten biology students from UGM who will participate in the International One Health Workshop at Leipzig University this August.

Prof. Uwe and Dr. Ahmed conveyed their enthusiasm for returning to Yogyakarta. During the meeting, both parties discussed opportunities for further collaboration, including an initiative to develop a dual degree program. They also explored plans for an international research collaboration involving Dr.rer.nat. Abdul Rahman Siregar, M.Biotech., from the Microbiology Laboratory, focusing on microbiome analysis in Komodo dragons and capacity building at the Komodo Island National Park Office, supported by a research grant from the European Union. This discussion was a follow-up to a previous field visit by the German delegation to Labuan Bajo.

Dr. Ahmed also highlighted the potential for collaborative research in bioinformatics to support the development of dry-lab-based research, aligning with the expertise of researchers at the Faculty of Biology UGM.

GAMA AYAM Distributes Incubators and Breeding Chickens to Support KWT Srikandi Mrican

Yogyakarta, Indonesia – February 19, 2025 – As part of its continued commitment to community empowerment, the GAMA AYAM team has provided an egg incubator and breeding chickens to the Srikandi Women Farmers Group (KWT Srikandi Mrican). This initiative, under the Pertamina Foundation’s PF Sains Implementation Program, aims to accelerate the development of sustainable local chicken farming.


The distribution ceremony was held at the KWT Srikandi Mrican demonstration plot and coincided with the group’s monthly meeting. The symbolic handover was carried out by Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc., on behalf of the GAMA AYAM team, and received by Ms. Nur Handayani, Chair of KWT Srikandi Mrican. Also in attendance were Mr. Heru, a representative of MAHAR chicken breeders from Condong Catur, along with GAMA AYAM team members Dian Sartika, S.Si., M.Sc. and Yusuf Febrianta.

This program is expected to significantly boost chicken farming efforts at the KWT demonstration site. The introduction of incubator technology is a step forward in improving hatch rates and increasing the availability of day-old chicks (DOCs), enhancing the group’s capacity to achieve egg self-sufficiency. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDGs No.9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, through the introduction of scalable agricultural technology; SDGs No.11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by empowering urban women farmers in productive agriculture; and SDGs No 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by fostering collaboration between GAMA AYAM and KWT Srikandi Mrican. Faculty of Biology UGM Initiates Orchid Research Collaboration on Dwarf Forma Bali with Udayana University and BRIDA Bali

Yogyakarta, June 2, 2025 — The Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), through its Biotechnology Laboratory, hosted a collaborative meeting with the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, and the Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA) of Bali Province on Monday, June 2, 2025. The meeting took place at the KPTU Meeting Room of the Faculty of Biology UGM.


This meeting aimed to discuss a joint research initiative focused on utilizing biotechnology to develop a new variety of Bali-native orchids, known as Dwarf Forma Bali. The collaboration is expected to strengthen both conservation efforts and innovation in the development of regional ornamental plants through modern biotechnological approaches.

The Udayana University delegation was led by Dr. Gusti Ngurah Alit Susanta Wirya, S.P., M.Agr., Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, accompanied by researchers Dr. Putu Sudiarta, Prof. Dr. Ir. Rindang Dwiyani, and Dr. Ida Ayu Putri Darmawati. From BRIDA Bali, Ir. I Nyoman Suarta, M.Si., Head of Regional Development Priority Division, attended along with several BRIDA staff members.

Representing the Faculty of Biology UGM were Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, S.Si., M.Sc., Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni; Wahyu Aristyaning Putri, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., Head of the Biotechnology Laboratory; Prof. Dr. Endang Semiarti, M.S., M.Sc.; Dr. Eng. Thoriq Teja Samudra, S.Si., M.Sc.; as well as undergraduate and graduate students under the supervision of Prof. Endang, who have long been engaged in orchid research as one of Indonesia’s leading tropical plant resources.

During the discussion session, the UGM Biotechnology Laboratory team presented their recent research progress, including:

  • Development of miniature orchid varieties using the CRISPR/Cas9 Genome Editing system
  • Identification and analysis of model plants to support miniature orchid development
  • Characterization of the ERECTA gene structure, which plays a role in orchid morphology regulation
This meeting marked an important step in strengthening research synergy between universities and regional research institutions in supporting the development of local genetic resources through innovative scientific approaches. It is hoped that the collaboration will not only result in superior orchid varieties but also enhance the role of scientific research in regional development and biodiversity conservation in Indonesia.

General Lecture Fundamentals of Ichthyology with Prof. Noritaka Mochioka, Kyushu University

Yogyakarta, May 14, 2025 — The Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a special guest lecture on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, featuring Prof. Noritaka Mochioka from the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, Japan. The lecture was part of the Ichthyology class and carried the theme “Life History and Conservation of the Eel,” attended by undergraduate and graduate students.


The event was officially opened by the Vice Dean for Cooperation, Research, Community Service, and Alumni, Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, M.App.Sc., who emphasized the importance of learning from international experiences and research in biodiversity conservation. “Cross-border learning provides students with essential global perspectives, especially in understanding fish population dynamics and conservation challenges for species like the eel,” said Dr. Eko.

Prof. Mochioka delivered an insightful presentation covering the complex life cycle of eels from the leptocephalus larval stage to adulthood, their remarkable long-distance migration, and the major threats they face due to climate change, pollution, and overexploitation. He stressed the need for international collaboration and ecology-based strategies for the conservation of aquatic species.

This event supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
