UGM Biology Students Participate in Sakura Science Program at Yamagata University, Japan

Yogyakarta, February 26, 2025 – Sixteen students from the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), participated in the Sakura Science Program at the Faculty of Science, Yamagata University, Japan. The program took place from February 15 to 23, 2025.


Accompanied by Prof. Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, the students began their activities with a field trip to the Mt. Gassan region to observe the environmental conditions covered in heavy snow in northern Japan. Led by Prof. Jun Yokoyama, the students were also taken on a tour of Yamagata City.

The following day, February 17, 2025, the students attended a series of lectures on biodiversity and recent advances in biological studies delivered by several professors, including Dr. Taisuke Kanao on “Termitophily: Unique insect diversity in termite nests”, Prof. Naoyuki Fujiyama on “Diversity of Asian insects with particular attention to researches on herbivorous ladybird beetles”, and Prof. Yutaka Miyazawa on “How do plant roots respond to water deficit? : Physiological and molecular biological dissection of root hydrotropism”.

From February 18 to 21, 2025, the students conducted a series of practical activities, including material selection for experiments, DNA isolation from organisms, DNA sequencing, and data analysis from PCR results. The outcomes of these activities were then compiled into reports and presented.

This program not only focused on academic aspects but also provided opportunities for students to learn about Japanese culture by visiting the Yamagata Prefectural Museum.

The Sakura Science Program aims to strengthen cooperation and knowledge exchange between the Faculty of Biology, UGM, and Yamagata University. This activity is expected to broaden students’ knowledge and insights in biology and strengthen the Faculty of Biology’s international network.

Gentalk 1 : Bioinformatics approach in genomic research and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)

On Friday, 14th of February 2025 at 1-1.30 PM, Gentalk 1 is held in the Laboratory of Genetics and Breeding, Faculty of Biology UGM. This program is targeted for all Formasigen members and Biology UGM students in general. Mrs. Ganies Riza Aristya, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., as Formasigen’s supervisor lecturer, also attended this program. Gentalk is an active discussion and sharing session between alumni or senior student and Formasigen’s member about the undergraduate thesis they are working on. In the first Gentalk of this year, there are 3 speakers, which are Azizah Tyas Nugrahanty, S.Si., Lucia Arum Sekar Meysari, S.Si., and Tiara Putria Judith. Azizah Tyas Nugrahanty, S.Si and Lucia Arum Sekar Meysari, S.Si. are master students in the Faculty of Biology UGM batch 2023, while Tiara Putria Judith is a master student in the Faculty of Biology UGM batch 2024, all under the supervision of Mrs. Ganies Riza Aristya, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. for their undergraduate thesis.


This program started with an opening from the Master of Ceremony, Andreas Wibisono, as a part of the Scientific Division of HomeoGenesis Cabinet, followed by an opening speech by Mrs. Ganies Riza Aristya, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. as the supervisor lecturer of Formasigen. In the speech, Mrs. Ganies express her hope for this program to be held more consistently and better so that this program can be a vessel for knowledge sharing and discussion for all Faculty of Biology’s students. The next activity is a presentation from all three speakers about “ Bioinformatics approach in genomic research : Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)” . This presentation contains the history of NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) which is a development from the previously known method, Sanger Sequencing. Unlike Sanger sequencing, NGS can detect the whole genome in a shorter time with high-throughput results. One of the applications for NGS is its usage for WGS (Whole Genome Sequencing). This presentation also introduced a website called usegalaxy as a free online platform for genome sequencing analysis. All participants are given a tutorial to access the website and follow instruction to analyse a sequence. After that, is the Q&A session followed by closing from the master of ceremony. With the success of the first Gentalk of this year, we hoped that this could be a good start to be a vessel for an interesting and beneficial discussion. We also hope that this program can give a better understanding about all the researches done by all the lecturers and their students in the Laboratory of Genetics and Breeding, Faculty of Biologi UGM. BIOENTRI 2025: Helping Students Determine Research Directions

Faculty of Biology UGM held Biology Open House and Introduction of Research Topics [BIOENTRI] 2025, an event that aims to introduce students to various research topics that can be an option in preparing a thesis, thesis, or dissertation. Through this activity, students have the opportunity to discuss directly with their supervisors according to their fields of expertise, so that they can gain a deeper understanding of the available research.


The event was officially opened on February 10, 2025 by the Dean of Faculty of Biology UGM, Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc. The series of events continued with presentation sessions from lecturers in Room 1, Room 2, and Teaching Lab, as well as research poster exhibitions in the booths that have been provided. Through this forum, students are expected to find research topics that suit their interests and academic plans. BIOENTRI 2025 will run for four days, from February 10 to 13, 2025. This activity received high enthusiasm as evidenced by the presence of students from undergraduate to postgraduate levels.

With BIOENTRI 2025, Faculty of Biology UGM hopes to facilitate students in determining the direction of their research and strengthen the synergy between students and lecturers in the world of research.

BIOENTRI 2025 activities also directly contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG number 4 on Quality Education and have a positive impact on achieving various other SDG targets, including the protection of biodiversity, ecosystem restoration (13, 14, 15), and improving community welfare through innovations in biotechnology and natural resource management (9, 11, 13).

Biology Students Win First Place in UGM Cendekia Days Essay Competition with Innovation on Sustainable Electric Nanogenerator

Kotimah, an undergraduate student from the 2022 cohort of the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), secured a remarkable achievement by winning first place in the Essay Competition held during Cendekia Days 2024, organized by UGM’s Cendekia Teknika. Khotimah collaborated with Rahayu Murti Ayuningtyas from the 2022 cohort of the Faculty of Engineering in the ”Biochem” team.


The Cendekia Days Essay Competition is an annual event aiming to promote critical thinking and innovation among students. The 2024 competition carried the theme: “Digital Native, Green Activists: Synergy for a Better Planet.” Participants could choose from sub-themes including energy and the environment, food security, technology and digitalization, creative industries, education, and sustainable development. The event seeks to broaden students’ knowledge in science and technology, foster innovative attitudes, and cultivate their roles as agents of change in advancing green technology for a sustainable future.

The competition, including registration and essay submission, took place from September 21 to October 12, 2024. The finalists were announced on October 26, 2024, with the top eight teams advancing to the final presentation stage on November 10, 2024, followed by the awarding ceremony on November 16, 2024. Among 152 submissions, Team Biochem achieved the highest score during the initial essay evaluation. Team Biochem successfully maintained its leading position and was ultimately awarded First Place.

The Biochem team’s essay focused on the energy and environment sub-theme, presenting their innovative concept of a Sustainable Electric Nanogenerator (SENG). SENG is a groundbreaking green energy solution designed to convert wasted mechanical energy into electricity. The innovation addresses critical environmental challenges, particularly those arising from the hydrodesulfurization process in petroleum refining, which poses significant risks of releasing hazardous per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into ecosystems. These substances are associated with severe health risks, including cancer, immune system damage, and miscarriages.

The SENG innovation is polymer-based and sulfur-rich, offering three key advantages: economic feasibility, sustainability, and environmentally friendly performance. This breakthrough demonstrates the potential for transformative contributions in renewable energy technologies, aligning with global efforts to address pressing environmental issues.

Biology Student Win Second Place in Biology Scientific Writing Competition with Innovation on Polyethylene Biodegradation Using Bacterial Enzymes

Yogyakarta – Kotimah, an undergraduate student from the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), has once again achieved a remarkable achievement by securing Second Place in the Biology Scientific Writing Competition. The event was themed “Enhancing the Role of Students in Building a Golden Indonesia 2045 through the Synergy of Culture, Innovative Education, and Ethics to Shape a Quality and Integrity-Driven Young Generation.” with sub-themes that aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).


The competition, including registration and essay submission, took place from August 12 to September 25, 2024. The finalists were announced on October 10, 2024, with the top 3 essays advancing to the final presentation stage and awards ceremony on October 17, 2024, at Universitas Siliwangi in Tasikmalaya.

Kotimah’s essays address the global issue of plastic waste, particularly non-biodegradable polyethylene, which constitutes 35% of annual plastic production. With approximately half of all plastic products being single-use items, polyethylene waste contributes significantly to environmental degradation. Its natural decomposition can take over 500 years, during which microplastics form, disrupting ecosystems and accumulating in organisms. Current disposal methods, such as incineration and chemical degradation, often release toxic substances and require costly catalysts, further complicating the issue.

To tackle this challenge, Kotimah developed a novel approach utilizing lipase enzymes from microorganisms to biodegrade polyethylene. These lipase enzymes, sourced from the anaerobic bacterium Pelosinus fermentans, demonstrated the capability to initiate polyethylene biodegradation.

This environmentally friendly solution presents numerous benefits, such as the ability to be mass-produced using renewable resources while remaining non-toxic, effective, and sustainable. By utilizing biological methods, Kotimah’s innovation provides a viable alternative for addressing the environmental challenges posed by plastic waste.

Farewell of Student Exchange Students for Odd Semester of Academic Year 2024/2025 Faculty of Biology UGM

Yogyakarta, December 13, 2024 – Faculty of Biology Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a farewell event for Student Exchange Program students on Friday, December 13, 2024, at Bong O Bong Grill, Gejayan. The event was attended by the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, M.Sc., Head of Undergraduate Study Program Sukirno, M.Sc., Ph.D., Head of International Undergraduate Program, Nur Indah Septriani, M.Sc., Ph.D., Manager of Office of International Affairs, Tyas Ikhsan Hikmawan, M.S., Ph.D., several representatives of lecturers, namely Mrs. Rina Sri Kasiamdari, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., Dr. Miftahul Ilmi, M.Sc., and Mukhlish Jamal Musa Holle M.Env.Sc, D.Phil., and some academic staff.


The event was opened by the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, M.Sc., who in his speech expressed his high appreciation to the students who had participated in this exchange program. He emphasized the importance of international experience as a strategic step for academic and personal development, as well as broadening students’ global horizons.

The Head of the Undergraduate Study Program Sukirno, M.Sc., Ph.D., on this occasion hoped that this student exchange program could continue to be implemented in the future, providing greater benefits for students and strengthening academic relations between universities in various countries.

The event took place in a warm and lively atmosphere, where one of the representatives of the exchange students, Nur Asma’ binti Mohd Asri, expressed her gratitude in Javanese for the opportunity given through this program.

This year, the Faculty of Biology UGM accepted 11 exchange students from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, and Toyo University. This program is a real proof of the efforts of the Faculty of Biology UGM in strengthening international networks and opening wider learning opportunities for students. Year-End Evaluation and Member Deliberation of Formasigen 2024

Student Activities Monday, 16 December 2024

On Friday, December 13, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM WIB, the Year-End Evaluation and Member Deliberation of Formasigen were held at the Genetics and Breeding Laboratory, Faculty of Biology, UGM. The activity was attended by Mrs. Ganies Riza Aristya, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., the Formasigen supervisor, the 2024 Formasigen team, and prospective members of the 2025 Formasigen team. This event served as a platform to review the Formasigen Bylaws and Articles of Association (AD/ART), evaluate the performance over the past year, and conduct a member deliberation to elect the 2025 Formasigen Chair. The objectives included updating the AD/ART based on recent agreements, monitoring the work programs carried out by the GenomCity Cabinet, identifying challenges encountered throughout the management period, providing constructive feedback and recommendations for program improvement, enhancing the quality of future work programs, and determining the next Formasigen Chair.


The event began with an opening by the MC, Enjang Sekaryati Prasetyaningrum, who served as the Head of the Public Relations and Networking Division of the 2024 GenomCity Cabinet. This was followed by a review of the AD/ART led by the first presidium, Muhammad Sena Budiman, and the second presidium, Ihsanti Tsania Fajriati. During this session, articles in the AD/ART were reviewed and updated to align with current conditions and ensure relevance for future management periods. After this session, there was a break for prayer, lunch, and rest.

The activity continued with the Year-End Evaluation and Member Deliberation. Before starting this session, remarks were delivered by Mrs. Ganies Riza Aristya, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., who expressed gratitude to the 2024 Formasigen management team for fulfilling their responsibilities well. She also emphasized that the evaluations presented during this session should serve as valuable lessons for the next management team. Furthermore, she extended her encouragement and congratulations to the candidates for the 2025 Formasigen Chair and management team. Following the remarks, presentations were conducted by the heads of each division to report on the work programs implemented throughout the year, along with evaluations and suggestions for improvement. The presentation began with the Chair, followed by the Secretary and Treasurer, and continued with the heads of the PSDM (Human Resources Development), Scientific, Household, Public Relations and Networking, and Media and Information Divisions.

The event then proceeded with the 2024 Member Deliberation. This session included the introduction and presentation of visions and missions by the candidates for the 2025 Formasigen Chair, Denianto Agung Wicaksono, Muhammad Meshal Ramdhayesa, and Muhammad Rafi Fairuza. A question-and-answer session was held with the 2024 Formasigen team and the prospective 2025 team. Subsequently, a deliberation was conducted to elect the chair. The announcement of the elected 2025 Formasigen Chair, Denianto Agung Wicaksono, followed, along with the handover of responsibilities from the 2024 Chair to the 2025 Chair. The Doctor in Biology Study Program of Biology UGM Partners with NAIST, Japan, for a Research Internship in Metabolomics

From October 1 to November 30, 2024, Noor Nailis Sa’adah, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), participated in a research internship at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan. The internship was funded by the Iida Scholarship and supervised by Prof. Dr. L. Hartanto Nugroho, M.Agr., Prof. Dr. Yekti Asih Purwestri, M.Si., and Dr.biol.hom. Nastiti Wijayanti, M.Si. At NAIST, Noor worked under the guidance of Prof. Takayuki Tohge in the Laboratory of Plant Secondary Metabolism, Division of Biological Sciences. The program was initiated by Prof. Dr. Yekti Asih Purwestri, an alumna of NAIST.

The research focused on “Metabolomic Profiling of Medinilla speciosa Fruit at Different Developmental Stages Using LCMS.” During the internship, Noor learned about metabolomic profiling techniques, sample extraction, LCMS operation, data annotation, and analysis. Data processing used Xcalibur software (Thermo Fisher Scientific) and included four main steps: 1) Qual Browser, 2) Processing Setup, 3) Sequence Setup, and 4) Quan Browser.
In addition to hands-on research, Noor participated in weekly unit and seminar meetings. These sessions provided opportunities to present progress, share research findings, and receive feedback from lab members and supervisors. The experience enhanced her understanding of metabolite diversity and its role in secondary plant metabolism, offering insights valuable for future research in metabolite engineering.

The internship provided significant personal and academic growth, exposing Noor to Japan’s educational environment, discipline, and research culture. Beyond academics, she also explored the beauty and culture of Japan, particularly in Nara, Osaka, and Kyoto.
This program highlights the importance of international collaboration, equipping students with new knowledge and experiences. It also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). It hoped this collaboration will continue, enabling more students and institutions to benefit.

Students of the Faculty of Biology UGM Presented “Long-read Sequencing Technology Innovation for Molecular Detection of Hereditary Diseases” at the 2024 InaSHG Conference

Undergraduate students from the Faculty of Biology at Gadjah Mada University—Alifia Nur Hidayah, Ardiza Puspa Rahmaningtyas, Farah Ayu Kamayani, Hana Magista Qathrunnada, Tazkia Mahsya Syavira, and Luisa Ramyahastri Paramatatya—participated in an international human genetics conference. This conference was the 3rd Indonesian Society of Human Genetics (InaSHG) Conference, held simultaneously with the 2nd Indonesian Society of Genetic Counselors (ISGC) Annual Meeting 2024. In collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine at Brawijaya University, the event took place from November 21-23, 2024, at the Grand Mercure Hotel, Malang. With the theme “Genomics Medicine: Translational from Bedside to Bench to Business,” the conference emphasized a comprehensive approach to the development of medical genetics. The program included research presentation sessions aimed at disseminating the latest research advancements, innovations in clinical practice, and developments in genetics policy. These sessions were designed to optimize knowledge exchange, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and enhance the professional competence of participants. The conference also featured symposia with speakers from prominent national and international genetics experts.


During the event, students under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Niken Satuti Nur Handayani, M.Sc., and Indra Lesmana, S.Si., M.Sc., presented their research on the development of a Long-read Sequencing Application for Genotyping Hereditary Diseases in Humans. This research aims to develop an efficient genetic screening methodology for detecting various hereditary diseases, focusing on hemophilia A, obesity, thalassemia, and atopic dermatitis using long-read sequencing technology developed by Oxford Nanopore Technologies. The students gained valuable experience presenting their research at an international scientific forum, honed their scientific communication skills, and were inspired to further develop their research and broaden their knowledge about the latest advancements in genomics.

This research has significant implications, not only in academic contexts but also in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3, which focuses on Good Health and Well-being. The contribution of this research to the development of genetics-based healthcare services represents a strategic step toward advancing the health system. The implementation of the developed technology is expected to have substantial impacts in several areas: optimizing preventive efforts and the management of genetic diseases, improving life expectancy for populations, and ensuring equitable, sustainable access to modern healthcare technologies.

Faculty of Biology Research Day 2024: From Molecule to Biosphere

Yogyakarta, November 13, 2024 – The Faculty of Biology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) proudly presents Research Day 2024, an event aimed at disseminating research and community service outcomes while showcasing the latest advancements in biology to the public. With the theme From Molecule to Biosphere, the event highlighted the vital role of biological sciences in human life, encompassing studies from the molecular scale to ecosystem dynamics.


The first day of Research Day 2024 began with the opening ceremony. Dr. Ririn Tri Nurhayati, S.IP., M.Si., M.A., Head of the Research Program Sub-Directorate at UGM’s Directorate of Research, attended the event and praised Research Day 2024 as an effective platform for technology transfer to society, supported by mini workshops featuring advanced scientific instruments. The event was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc., who expressed his hopes that Research Day 2024 would deepen scientific knowledge, strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations, and introduce biological innovations to academics and practitioners alike. As part of the Faculty’s Dies Natalis (anniversary) celebrations, Research Day 2024 was supported by partners including CV Dynata Image Creative, IGF Faculty of Biology, PT Ditek Jaya, PT Indolab Utama, PT Nutrilab Pratama, PT Wadya Prima Mulia, and Elo Karsa Utama.

On the first day, the theme of Molecular Biology took center stage in two focused workshop sessions. The first session introduced participants to the Promega Maxwell Automated DNA/RNA Extraction system and DNA quality control using the Agilent TapeStation. These tools are critical for ensuring the accuracy of molecular-level research.

The second session delved into Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) Sequencing and Metabarcoding Data Analysis, exploring cutting-edge methods for sequencing and metabarcoding to analyze microbiome compositions and identify organisms at the molecular level.

Mastery of molecular biology technologies is essential for addressing challenges in health, environmental science, and agriculture. These techniques enable researchers to identify pathogenic microorganisms rapidly, gain insights into the genetics of specific species, and precisely map ecosystems. Such applications support solutions across scales, from cellular processes to ecosystem dynamics.

Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with experts and practitioners from UGM’s partners. Additionally, several leading laboratories within the Faculty of Biology, such as the Microbiology Laboratory and the Genetics and Breeding Laboratory, provided hands-on experiences, enriching the practical knowledge of attendees.

With its overarching theme From Molecule to Biosphere, the first day of Research Day 2024 underscored the critical role of biology in building a comprehensive understanding of life—from cellular metabolism to ecosystem interactions. The Faculty of Biology at UGM hopes this event will continue to drive scientific progress and promote technological applications across various sectors of life.
