On Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19, 2024, the Marine Study Group (KSK) organized a series of events for Oceans Day 2024: Caring for the Ocean, Caring for Each Other. On the first day, May 18, 2024, a beach cleanup activity was held at Slili Beach, Gunungkidul. The event started at 11:05 WIB, followed by remarks from Jagad Wenang Suryoaji (DXXIII), the Chairperson of Oceans Day 2024, and Mr. Parvez Alam, the partner and sponsor. The activities included games, participated by the KSK committee, volunteer participants, children from Al Khusna orphanage, and even Mr. Parvez Alam and his daughter, Lilja Alam. The beach cleanup was conducted following the grouping of participants and location assignments as directed by Slili Beach authorities, along with a briefing on waste separation. This activity continued until 12:05 WIB followed by a break.
After the break, there was a session on education and creation of artworks guided by Alisha Syavitri Ramadhani A (DXXIII) and Muhammad Haidar Ali (DXXIV). Participants were divided into groups and given one hour to create artwork from recycled plastic bottles, followed by a presentation session guided by organizers. Next, an enjoyable activity, capoeira was held at Slili Beach with Mr. Parvez and Lilja. After the games, representatives from Al-Khusna orphanage and volunteers shared their impressions of today’s event. The event concluded with a speech from Mr. Parvez and a group photo.
On Sunday, May 19, 2024, the Marine Study Group (KSK) of the Faculty of Biology, Gadjah Mada University, successfully held the Marine Studies Forum (FKK) titled “Blue Economy as a Response to the Massive Growth of Mass Tourism: Reality or Vision?” The event took place at the Tropical Biology Auditorium, Faculty of Biology, and online via Zoom meeting. This forum aimed to discuss marine issues from various perspectives through sharing and discussion methods, featuring Mr. Supriyanta, S.Sos., M.M. from the Gunungkidul Tourism Office and Dr. Imam Musthafa Zainuddin from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) as speaker.
The Marine Studies Forum (FKK) hosted by Angga Firza Pratama and Grace River Theofilia Putri Subadi and attended by 65 participants from KSK members, volunteers, and external parties from the Faculty of Biology and beyond UGM. The forum began with opening remarks by the MC, followed by singing the Indonesian national anthem, the Gadjah Mada University hymn, and the KSK anthem. The event was preceded with speeches from Muhammad Ariq Alfito, Chairman of KSK Biogama, and Jagad Wenang Suryoaji, the event chairman. Next, an introductory video on the Blue Economy and Mass Tourism shown, followed by an initial discussion between the MC and the speakers.
Proceeding to the main event, the first interview shown, focusing on tourism in Gunungkidul, followed by a discussion with the speakers and Koor KK. Next, a second interview video on marine biota was shown, leading to a discussion with the speakers, Koor KK, and external parties. Following the discussion, there was a presentation and Q&A session with Mr. Supriyanta, S.Sos., M.M. from the Gunungkidul Tourism Office, and a token of appreciation was given to the first speaker. The event continued with a presentation and Q&A session with Dr. Imam Musthafa Zainuddin from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and tokens of appreciation were given to the speakers at the end of the session. On Sunday, June 2, 2024, The Social Community Division (SOSMAR) of the Graduate Student Association (KMP) conducted the ‘KMP Teaching,’ an annual activity held twice a year at different institutions. The activity took place at YKAKI located at Jl. Timor Tim. No.9, Purwosari, Sinduadi, Mlati District, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, with the theme “Build Spirit: Educate and Encourage the Young Generation.” The activity aimed to demonstrate the KMP’s concern for children with cancer. This year, the SOSMAR Division collaborated with the Spiritual Division to implement the “KMP Teaching” program. This activity was attended by 10 KMP members and 15 children from YKAKI.
The activity began with an opening led by Puji Lestari, S.Pd., as the Master of Ceremony (MC), followed by speeches and gratitude from the event organizers to the leaders and mentors of YKAKI. The activity proceeded with coloring sessions, followed by a 30-minute session of educational animation viewing. Before the Quran recitation session, there was singing, applause, and awarding for the best colorings. The Quran recitation was conducted by Safril, S.Si., the head of the Spiritual Division.The event concluded with group photos, certificate presentations, and a donation to the head of Yayasan Kasih Anak Kanker Indonesia as a gesture of concern and support for children with cancer.
It is hoped that such activities will enhance the children’s learning spirit and motivation at YKAKI Yogyakarta. The program aims to continue with more inspiring and engaging activities in the future.
On Saturday, June 2, 2024, the Interest and Talent Development Division of the Graduate Student Association (KMP) Faculty of Biology Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) organized the BioLens event. The event aimed to foster graduate student interests and talents in photography, as training in photography for research purposes, and to introduce campus facilities that support research. The event took place at Ledok Sambi Kaliurang, Yogyakarta, with the theme “Capture The Beauty of Nature.”
The event consisted of two sessions: a material session and a photo-hunting session and was opened by Nadhifa Ummulhusna Dyah Wikantyasti, S.Si., and Ananda Putri Gita Natasya, S.Pd., as the MC. The material session was delivered by Rizal Muhammad Rifa’i, S.Pd, covering tools in photography, photography techniques, and photo editing, followed by a Q&A session, where participants asked about general photography challenges and steps on photography for research purposes.
The event continued with a photo-hunting session around the Ledok Sambi Kaliurang. Then, the photos uploaded to the prepared Google Drive for the judging session. During the judging session, the judges struggled to determine the winners. After intense discussion, the winners of the three best photos were announced: 1) Alfian Surya Fathoni, S. Pd., 2) Wahyul Fatwatul Umam AS, S.Si., and 3) Arfika Racmadianira, S.Si. From May 30 to June 1, 2024, a team from the Faculty of Biology at Universitas Gadjah Mada had the opportunity to visit the Department of Life Science and the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at Tunghai University. This visit was represented by one of the Faculty of Biology lecturers, Ganies Riza Aristya, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., accompanied by two Fasttrack Master’s by Research students, Azizah Tyas Nugrahanty, S.Si., and Lucia Arum Sekar Meysari, S.Si.
A warm welcome was extended by Professor Shao-Lun Liu and the researchers at the Department of Life Science. A sharing session was held to exchange experiences and knowledge about the latest advancements in phylogenetic analysis of plants, and there was an opportunity to learn about the prospects of studying at Tunghai University. We were also given the chance to have a discussion session with Professor Li-Wei Wu about the diversity of butterflies in the world, particularly in Taiwan.
Additionally, the team had the opportunity to visit the Net Zero Emission area at Tunghai University, a futuristic project developed to support environmental sustainability. One of the main initiators of this project is Professor Hong-Wei Yen, who is currently developing research on the potential of microalgae in the industrial world. During the visit, Professor Yen explained the idea of utilizing biomass from microalgae as an innovative solution to support sustainable and environmentally friendly fish and hydroponic vegetable farming.
This program demonstrates the Faculty of Biology’s commitment to supporting Universitas Gadjah Mada’s efforts to strengthen its ranking in distinguished scientific fields, contributing to science and humanity. This goal aligns with SDG number 8 on education. Furthermore, this visit represents one of the implementations of the Tri Dharma of Universitas Gadjah Mada. It is expected that this visit will expand Universitas Gadjah Mada’s international collaborations with other renowned universities. We extend our gratitude to Professor Shao-Lun Liu, Professor Hong-Wei Yen, Professor Li-Wei Wu, and all the staff of Tunghai University for warmly welcoming us and providing very interesting knowledge and information.

Under the supervision of Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, M.Sc., and Partner Professor at Kasetsart University Prof. Kornsorn Srikulnath, Alfian will participate in this esteemed program aimed at fostering international academic collaboration and student development for the period of 3 months.
The iIREPs SciKU 2024 is an International Graduate Student Exchange Program organized by Kasetsart University, Thailand. It offers international students opportunities for internships or short-term research participation across various faculties at Kasetsart University.
The program Objectives:
- Promote International Graduate Student Exchange: Encouraging cross-cultural academic experiences and knowledge sharing among graduate students worldwide.
- Enhance International Academic Collaboration: Providing short-term scholarships to support internships or research, fostering academic and professional development.

This opportunity will not only enrich his academic journey but also contribute to his professional growth and cross-cultural understanding.
On Saturday, May 25, 2024, the Postgraduate Student Family (KMP) of the Faculty of Biology UGM, held an online Design and Photography Workshop on Biological Objects with the theme “Do Judge a Book by its Cover” via Zoom Meeting. This event was part of the Media Communication Division (Medkom) of KMP work programs. The workshop aimed to provide basic techniques on design and photography for postgraduate students, to support publication and documentation activities.
The Workshop was attended by 29 participants, and guided by Aryan Mustamin, S.Si, as the Master of Ceremony. The event began with a prayer by Alexander Tage, S.Si., and the singing of Indonesia Raya, Hymne UGM, and Mach Biologi. Following this, Dr. rer. nat. Andhika Puspito Nugroho, S.Si, M.Si., the advisor of KMP Faculty of Biology UGM, gave a welcoming speech and officially opened the workshop.
The workshop featured Raafi Nur Ali, S.Pd. as a speaker, a postgraduate student at The Faculty of Biology UGM, who is an expert in design and photography. He discussed tools for photographing biological objects, such as the types of cameras. He explained the best times for taking photos to achieve the best results, such as photographing insects at 6-7 AM, 8-10 AM, and 4-6 PM. He emphasized the importance of the angle, framing, and exposure to match the actual conditions. The speakers also explained various design and photo editing tools, such as photo editors, design illustration layouts, and Canva. The next topic was designing posters and covers using applications like Pinterest and Canva. He highlighted several aspects to consider when designing posters and covers, such as preparing a folder, required data, photos, QR codes, ATM, shapes, and other tools. Poster and cover design can be done by preparing A3 or A2 paper sizes and using contrasting color compositions, such as a dark background for bright objects and vice versa. The speaker concluded by providing references and credits to enhance creativity and improve design skills among the workshop participants.
The event continued with a discussion and Q&A session. Participants were actively engaged, with questions related to photographing small objects, photographing biological objects in tissue culture research, and designing attractive and uncluttered research posters. The Workshop concluded with a group photo session.
On Friday, March 29, 2024, the Joyful Iftar Gathering event was held. The JMMB UGM collaborated with the Faculty of Biology UGM and the Yatim Mandiri Foundation to share more happiness with those in need. The Joyful Iftar program not only provided iftar packages but also offered valuable experiences. The participants were treated to a special storytelling session full of inspiration. Religious materials and motivation were delivered to foster spiritual growth and self-development.
The activity took place at the Al-Hayat Mosque of the Faculty of Biology UGM, and was attended by orphans and the underprivileged from the Yatim Mandiri Foundation. The activity was opened by Birrul Qisty Mutmainnah Nazara and Zidny Qonita Addini, followed by remarks from Prof Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc., the Dean of Faculty of Biology UGM and Try Sujatmiko Ramadhani, S.Si representing the Yatim Mandiri Foundation. The activity followed by the distribution of blessings from Prof Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc. The activity continued with storytelling by Kak Andria and playing games together. After playing games, the participants broke their fast together.
The purpose of the Joyful Iftar Together activity is to provide an opportunity for orphans and the underprivileged to experience joy and comfort in a warm and friendly atmosphere during the month of Ramadan, to provide valuable and inspirational edutainment experiences, and to foster spiritual growth and self-development. On Saturday, March 23, 2024, the Community Social Department of BEM Biology UGM organized the ‘’ Bagi Buka Berlian’’ event (Sharing Nobility During Ramadan), as part of the department's program to share and hold iftar gathering during the month of Ramadan. The theme of the event was "The Beauty of Sharing in a Blessed Month." The event took place at the Islamic Orphanage of the Ibadah Bunda Foundation and was attended by 13 committee members from the Community Social Department and 25 children from the orphanage. The event aimed to welcome the month of Ramadan 1445 H, foster camaraderie among one another, and serve as a means to share blessings.
The event opened at 4:00 PM, and was led by the MC, followed by remarks from Okcarinda Wahyu Romadani, the Event Field Coordinator, and Muhammad Nurul Fathoni Adha, the 2024 Chairman of BEM Biology UGM, as well as by Mrs. Ningsih, the caretaker of the Islamic Orphanage of the Ibadah Bunda Foundation. The event included a guess the style game designed to boost spirits and foster unity between the committee members and the children, creating a closer and warmer relationship. This session was filled with fun and laughter as the committee members and children enthusiastically participated in the games.Following the games, there was a religious talk by Ustadz Muhammad Iqbal on the theme "Productive Ramadan," aimed at increasing knowledge about Islam and bringing additional blessings. This session taught us to remain active in positive activities even while fasting and to always seek the favor of Allah SWT.The event then moved on to a communal iftar with the children of the orphanage, which included shared meals and warm conversations, followed by the Maghrib prayer led by Ustadz Muhammad Iqbal. The activity concluded at 07.00 P.M. with a group photo.
The conclusion of this event was hoped to foster good relationships among all participants through mutual assistance and joy. Additionally, this blessed month of Ramadan serves as an opportunity for us all to compete in doing good deeds, thereby enhancing our faith, earning multiplied rewards, and hoping to reunite in the holy month of Ramadan 2025. The Faculty of Biology Universitas Gadjah Mada in collaboration with the Graduate Student Family (KMP) successfully conducted an Open House event: Introduction to the Master’s and Doctoral Programs at the Faculty of Biology, UGM 2024. This event was held online through Zoom Meeting and live streaming Youtube on Saturday, May 18, 2024. The event aimed to provide information about the Master’s and Doctoral programs at the Faculty of Biology through Reguler/by course pathway, by research and Double-degree to prospective students. The session included an overview of the Faculty of Biology UGM and its history, description of study program and subjects interest, admission pathway and requirements, as well as International collaboration between Faculty of Biology UGM and international university.
The event began at 09:45 WIB, hosted by Wiwin Arieati, S.Si., commenced with the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, the Universitas Gadjah Mada Hymn, and the March of Faculty of Biology. Followed by a welcoming speech from Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, M.App.Sc. as the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni Affairs. Subsequently, there was a presentation session guided by Emi Suhaemi, S.Si., a postgraduate student from the Faculty of Biology. In the first session, Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, M.App.Sc., provided a concise overview of the profile,study program at the faculty of Biology UGM, research, publications, community service, collaboration, and alumni of the Faculty of Biology UGM. Following that, Prof. Dr. Endah Retnaningrum, M.Eng, as the head of doctor in biology study program delivered the second session on introduction of the Doctoral program including the vision, mission, graduate profile, number of graduates, degrees, facilities, admission pathways (regular and by research), curriculum structure and courses distribution for the Doctor in Biology Study Program. The third session was delivered by the head of master in biology study program, Dr. rer. nat. Andhika Puspito Nugroho, S.Si., M.Si., on the vision, mission, graduate profile, number of graduates, degrees, facilities, admission pathways (regular and by research), registration stages (information access, document preparation, admission, selection process and announcement), curriculum structure and courses distribution.
The next session continued with a sharing session with alumni from the Graduate Program of the Faculty of Biology. The first session was presented by Ariel Hananya, S.Si., M.Sc., a Master’s program alumnus, who shared his experiences during his studies, his initial motivation to enroll in the Graduate Program of the Faculty of Biology UGM, the job prospects for Biology graduates, particularly those from the Faculty of Biology UGM through KAGAMA and FABIOGAMA, and his pride as an alumnus of the Faculty of Biology UGM. The sharing session for the Doctoral program alumni was delivered by Dr. Junaidi, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., who shared his experiences as a graduate of the first Double-Degree Doctoral Program at UGM and L’institut agro Montpellier in France.
After the presentation and alumni sharing sessions concluded, there was a question-and-answer session for both the Master’s and Doctoral programs in Biology at UGM.. Participants were highly enthusiastic in asking questions, and all queries were well addressed by the speakers. The participants’ questions generally revolved around the Double-Degree program, the admission requirements for the Master’s and Doctoral programs, proposal plans for prospective new students on the by Research track, and the selection of promotor according to the prospective students’ fields of interest. The final activity was motivational speeches from lecturers and alumni to prospective new students of the Faculty of Biology, followed by the closing remarks by the MC.
The routine Open House Biology event is one of the important activities conducted by the Faculty of Biology UGM every semester as part of the Graduate Program outreach. This event provides a great opportunity for prospective new students of the Graduate Program of the Faculty of Biology UGM to interact directly with lecturers and alumni of the Faculty of Biology UGM. Questions about registration information, Faculty profiles, fields of interest, and offered courses, as well as job prospects for alumni of the Faculty of Biology UGM, are expected to provide more detailed information and assist prospective new students in making decisions to continue their Master’s and Doctoral education at the Faculty of Biology UGM.

On Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19, 2024, the Faculty of Biology Universitas Gadjah Mada conducted training for the 2024 Buddy Counselors. These Buddy Counselors are students selected through a screening process by the Faculty of Biology’s Mental Health Team during the recruitment, held from February 12-16, 2024. They are tasked with providing emotional support and adequate counseling to fellow students in need. The Buddy Counselor program aims to help UGM become a Health Promoting University (HPU) with a focus on Mental Health and a Zero Tolerance for Violence, Bullying, and Harassment, which are the priorities of the UGM HPU activities. For 2024, Buddy Counselors are also assigned to mentor ten new students each during the PPSMB (Student Orientation).
This two-day training took place at the Faculty of Biology UGM and Kaliurang. The first session, held in the Faculty of Biology UGM Auditorium, began with a welcome speech from the Dean of the Faculty of Biology UGM, Prof. Dr. Budi S. Daryono, M.Agr.Sc. In his speech, Prof. Budi stated that this training activity is a commendable initiative. Being a Buddy is a noble task, and those selected should be grateful as not everyone gets this opportunity. The Buddies are responsible for helping to achieve a balance in mental and physical health. According to the training theme, “Be a Listener, Understand Better,” Buddies must be good listeners. Just like waiting, being a listener requires patience. Those who can wait will achieve success. At the end of his speech, Prof. Budi announced that there would be an award for the best Buddy Counselor during the Dies Natalis ceremony. “There will be an award for the best Buddy, the best of the bestie,” concluded the Dean. Following his speech, the Dean inaugurated the 2024 Buddy Counselors of the Faculty of Biology UGM by presenting jackets to one of the Buddy Counselors.
The first session on Zero Tolerance for Violence, Bullying, and Harassment delivered by Sri Wiyanti Eddyono, S.H., LL.M.(HR), Ph.D., known as Bu Iyik, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law UGM and serves as the Chair of the POKJA Zero-Tolerance Bullying, Violence, and Harassment HPU UGM, as well as the Head of the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (PPKS) at UGM. Her presentation covered:
– Introduction to the three major issues in higher education
– The country’s response to these major issues
– UGM’s response to Bullying and Violence, especially Sexual Violence
– Procedures for handling Sexual Violence and Bullying
Besides delivering the material, participants also learn to resolve violence cases that occur at UGM, which is followed with great enthusiasm by all participants.
The second session on Mental Health was conducted in the meeting room of Wisma Pesanggrahan PU, Kaliurang. This session was delivered by Yudhistira Adi Perdana, M.Psi., Psychologist from the Faculty of Biology UGM. Mas Yudhis provided insights on how Buddy Counselors should handle counselees, from listening, questioning, to giving advice.
After a break, the evening featured a discussion on the work program to be implemented over a year. Participants were divided into two groups, and each group must present their discussion results, which then summarized by the Mental Health Team consisting of Psychologist Yudhistira Adi Perdana, M.Psi., and Faculty Counselor Lecturers, Dwi Umi Siswanti, S.Si., M.Sc., Dr. Dwi Sendi Priyono, S.Si., M.Si., and Dr.rer.nat. Abdul Rahman Siregar, M.Biotech., as well as PIC HPU Faculty of Biology UGM, Titin Fauziah, S.E., M.B.A. To conclude the training, there was a bonding activity involving a bonfire and gift exchange among participants. The next morning, on Sunday, May 19, 2024, all participants went trekking around Kaliurang.
This training is an effort by the Faculty of Biology UGM to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Good Health and Well-being, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
