Yogyakarta, August 26, 2026 — The Laboratory of Genetics and Breeding, Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), held the #8 Cytogenetics, Molecular Genetics, and Bioinformatics Training at the Upper Meeting Room, Meeting Room 1, and the Laboratory of Genetics and Breeding. The training was attended by 22 participants and aimed to strengthen participants’ competencies in genetic analysis techniques through cytogenetic and molecular genetic approaches to support research, breeding, and the conservation of plants and animals.
The event commenced at 8:00 a.m. WIB with an opening session, followed by remarks from Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc., Dean of the Faculty of Biology, UGM, and a lecturer at the Laboratory of Genetics and Breeding, Faculty of Biology, UGM.
The first day featured two training packages. Package 1, Basic Cytogenetics Training and Its Applications: Chromosome Preparation Techniques and Plant Karyotype Analysis, began with a presentation by Ganies Riza Aristya, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. The session covered the timing of cell mitosis and chromosome numbers in various plant species. It was followed by a laboratory (wet lab) session on chromosome preparation techniques, including tissue fixation, staining, and microscopic slide preparation. The session concluded with observation of the prepared slides, karyotype construction, and idiogram preparation, with guidance from instructors Muhammad Meshal Ramadhayesa, S.Si., Audrey Azalia Jovita, and Elisabeth Lintang Permata. Package 2, DNA Sequence Data Integration and Bioinformatics for Genetic Variation Analysis in Conservation and Breeding, began with a presentation by Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc., on Integrating DNA Sequence Data and Bioinformatics in Genetically Informed Breeding. The session continued with practical activities involving DNA isolation and DNA quantification testing for animal and plant samples, followed by PCR amplification and electrophoresis. These activities were supervised by instructors Adib Fakhruddin Yusuf, S.Si., M.Sc., Aldy Riau Wansyah Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Sc., and Tiara Putria Judith, S.Si., M.Sc.
The first day concluded at 3:30 p.m. WIB with certificate presentation and a group documentation session with Package 1 participants, followed by an overview of the next day’s agenda for Package 2 participants. The training is expected to equip participants with technical, analytical, and practical skills in genetics, thereby supporting research and innovation in breeding and biological resource conservation. The training also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 15 (Life on Land), by contributing to capacity building in genetic research and conservation.
