Yogyakarta, August 27, 2026 — The Laboratory of Genetics and Breeding, Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), held the #8 Cytogenetics, Molecular Genetics, and Bioinformatics Training at the Upper Meeting Room, Meeting Room 1, and the Laboratory of Genetics and Breeding. The training was attended by 22 participants and aimed to strengthen participants’ competencies in genetic analysis techniques through cytogenetic and molecular genetic approaches to support research, breeding, and the conservation of plants and animals.
The event commenced at 8:00 a.m. WIB with the implementation of Package 2 and Package 3. For Package 2, the second day continued with materials on Molecular and Bioinformatics Approaches to Genetic Conservation and Population Management, followed by practical sessions on chromatogram analysis, sequence editing, and consensus sequence construction using GeneStudio, delivered by Prof. Dra. Tuty Arisuryanti, M.Sc., Ph.D. The activities continued with an integrative analysis of genetic variation and population structure using Mesquite, MEGA, DnaSP, NETWORK, and GenAlEx, supervised by instructors Adib Fakhruddin Yusuf, S.Si., M.Sc., and Aldy Riau Wansyah Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Sc. Package 2 concluded with a presentation session by the sponsor, PT Kairos. Meanwhile, Package 3, Molecular Biology Techniques for Genetic Disorder Detection: Applications of Next-Generation Sequencing and Bioinformatics, began with a presentation by Prof. Dr. Niken Satuti Nur Handayani, M.Sc., on the classification and nomenclature of genetic variants. The session continued with PCR and electrophoresis practical activities, followed by participant-led interpretation of the results under the guidance of instructor Nafis Muhimmatul ‘Ulya, S.Si. Participants also took part in a Library Preparation and Sequencing practical session conducted by IGF (Integrated Genome Factory).
The second day concluded at 3:30 p.m. WIB with certificate presentation and a group documentation session with Package 2 participants, followed by an overview of the next day’s agenda for Package 3 participants. The training is expected to equip participants with technical, analytical, and practical skills in genetics, thereby supporting research and innovation in breeding and biological resource conservation. The training also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 14 (Life Below Water), and Goal 15 (Life on Land), by contributing to capacity building in genetic research and conservation.
