Active Participation of MBKM Research Team of Faculty of Biology UGM in ICOBIOS X OBC 2024 at Brawijaya University to Support the Discovery of New Venom Peptide-Based Drugs in Overcoming Multidrug Resistant Bacteria

Alif Monica Putriningsih and Mutiara Charissa Putri Nugraheni, students of the Faculty of Biology MBKM Team, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), had the opportunity to participate in the ICOBIOS X OBC 2024 international conference held at Brawijaya University, Malang, on September 28-29, 2024. This prestigious event sponsored by Generasi Biologi Indonesia (INBIO-Indonesia) brings together experts from various biological disciplines to share the latest findings and discuss solutions to global challenges. With the theme “Recent Updates in Bioinformatics, Synthetic Biology, and Nanobio Science for a Better Future”, ICOBIOS 2024 presents a wide range of interesting topics on cutting-edge technology and science. From in-depth seminars to interactive workshops, the conference provides a space for participants to collaborate and broaden their horizons on the latest developments in bioinformatics, synthetic biology, and nanobiotechnology.

On this occasion, the MBKM Team from Faculty of Biology UGM presented their research which was mentored by Dr. Wahyu Aristyaning Putri from Faculty of Biology UGM and Dr. Didik Huswo Utomo from INBIO-Indonesia. This research was conducted through the exploration of various active peptides derived from snake venom as new drug candidates to overcome Multidrug Resistant (MDR) bacterial infections, especially in Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus that have resistance to various antibiotics. The main objective of this study was to identify effective active peptides from snake venom as an alternative drug to overcome MDR bacterial infections. An in silico approach was applied to analyze and compare the potential of various active peptides, in order to determine the most potential peptide type. The results showed that the candidate peptides with PDB chains 1F8R_A_5, 1F8R_A_21, and A0A0H3U266_pep_1 are the most potential peptides as new drugs to overcome MDR bacterial infections, namely Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

This discovery offers new hope for the medical world, and opens the door to the development of more effective and environmentally friendly treatments. By identifying active peptides derived from snake venom, this study has the potential to generate new drug candidates that are effective against infections caused by Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, the results from this research support the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets, including SDG 3: Health and Wellbeing, which focuses on reducing infectious diseases, as well as SDG 17: Partnerships for Purpose, which emphasizes the importance of collaboration between academics, researchers, and practitioners in finding innovative solutions to global health challenges. Through a sustainable and research-based approach, this study has the potential to strengthen public health resilience and improve overall quality of life.

 

Sendari Community are Enthusiast on Learning Biopory Absroption Holes in One Health Socialization Activities by PkM-MBKM Faculty of Biology UGM 2024.

Yogyakarta, 15th September 2024 – The Community Service Team Program Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (PkM MBKM) Faculty of Biology UGM held community empowerment activities at Sendari, Cebongan, Tirtoadi, Sleman. This activity was led by three lecturers from Faculty of Biology UGM such as Novita Yustinadiar, M.Sc., Woro Anindito Sri Tanjung, Ph.D., and Wahyu Aristyaning Putri, Ph.D., and also supported by 13 students. The program, titled, One Health : Introduction to Biopory Absorption Holes, is implemented with the aim to increase environmental awareness and encourage people to actively participate in preserving nature through simple solutions and big impacts.

The activity, which took place at the house of the Head of RT 03 Sendari, started at 14.00 until 16.00 WIB. This socialization focused on introducing the One Health Concept through the use of biopory absorption holes. Biopory plays an important role by helping to reduce waterlogging, improving soil quality and supporting ecosystem balance. Participants, which are members of PKK, are expected to understand the importance of biopory absorption holes as an environmentally friendly solution which is applicable in daily life.

The event began with remarks from Mrs. Priwanti as Head of Dukuh, followed by the socialization material from Wahyu Aristyaning Putri, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., who explained the definition of biopory, the maintenance and the function for the environment. Mrs. Putri also shared her experience in using biopory at home and how the great benefits obtained. She emphasized that biopores are not only more efficient as water absorption but also increase soil fertility and prevent flooding in urban and rural areas. Continue with the presentation by the students of the material by highlighting the background information of the idea, working principles, how to make biopsy absorption holes, the ideal location for placing the biopores and various types of biopores that are applicable at home.

As part of the activity, participants were invited to directly demonstrate in the making of biopory absorption holes. They were divided into three groups where each group was given the tas of making one to two biopore holes around their house. After the demonstration was finished, the PkM-MBKM team gave assessments and awards to the group that showed the best result. Thus, the team also explained how to maintain the biopore so that the biopore will last in long term. Participants also were given guidance on materials that could be inserted into the hole, such as organic waste, which helps to catalyze the decomposition process and maintain the balance of the soil ecosystem.

The program to introduce biopore infiltration has strong relevance to several points in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). First, the biopory itself, helps achieve SDG number 6 which is Clean Water and Adequate Sanitation, by increasing water absorption into the soil and maintaining groundwater quality. Second, biopory supports SDG number 11, which is Sustainable Cities and Settlements, through green infrastructure that reduce the risk of flooding/ Third, biopory contributes to SDG number 13, which is Addressing Climate Change, by help to mitigate the impacts of climate change through better water and land management. Fourth, biopory support SDG number 15 which is Life on Land through increasing soil fertility and conserving soil biodiversity. Last, the application of biopory also relevant to SDG number 3 which is Healthy Lives and Well-being, since it helps to reduce the risk of standing water which may trigger disease.

All in all, the event closed with the distribution of door prizes and prizes for the winner of the Biopory competition. We al hoped that this activity will increase the community’s understanding of the importance of protecting the environment, as well as a real step at Sendari for a healthier and free of puddles of water. With One Health spirit, this program hopes that changes in people’s lifestyles as a positive impact, not only for people’s health but also the surrounding environment.

Strengthening Cooperation and Collaboration on Biodegradable Plastics With PT Greenhope, Indonesia: A Lecturer of Faculty of Biology, UGM, Conducts Capstone Project Activities

The issue of waste is becoming increasingly critical, posing threats to environmental health on land, marrine, and air. Thus, there is a need for well-structured waste management mechanisms, supported by advanced technology, to tackle this challenge. One long-standing effort has been implementing the 3R+1R approach: Reuse, Recycle, and Reduce, with an addition of Return to Earth. This approach has been developed by PT Greenhope Indonesia. “Return to Earth” addresses a missing piece by offering biodegradable and biopolymer-based plastic solutions to combat plastic waste pollution and the climate crisis. This theme aligns with the research conducted by the Smart Genetics Research Group, led by Ganies Riza Aristya, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., a lecturer in the Genetics and Breeding Laboratory, Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM).

From July 22-24, 2024, Ganies had the opportunity to collaborate with PT Greenhope Indonesia in the implementation of the Capstone Project Program from the University Quality Assurance and Reputation Unit. The Capstone Project allows faculty members to integrate and apply their expertise and competencies to solve industrial problems. The theme for this collaboration focused on a new breakthrough in biodegradable plastic products derived from Microbial Cell Factory, specifically recombinant yeast. Biodegradable plastics contribute significantly to environmental health and sustainability, especially in reducing the impact of plastic waste. They can replace conventional plastics in various applications, such as food packaging, product packaging, and laboratory equipment.

The activities began with discussions and presentations, conducted both online and offline at PT Greenhope’s office, laboratory, and factory. Additionally, direct observation of the production process for biodegradable products such as Oxium, Ecoplas, and Naturaloop from PT Greenhope was conducted. Ganies also explained the genetic transformation processes and methods developed to produce biodegradable plastics from recombinant yeast. Both parties agreed to pursue joint research activities, supported by an MoU and collaboration proposal. Ganies expressed hope that this collaboration will continue to grow, producing sustainable, environmentally friendly, and forward-looking products. Representing PT Greenhope, Dr. Hardaning Pranamuda, M.Sc., Director of R&D, along with two researchers, Muhammad Ardiyansyah, S.Si., and Ir. Daffa Dewa Saputra, S.T., welcomed the collaboration with enthusiasm and commitment to mutual contribution. Research and development of biodegradable plastics can significantly contribute to achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in efforts to reduce the impact of plastic waste on the environment and human health, said Hardaning during the closing of the discussion session.

In addition to its significant contribution to solving waste problems, this activity aligns with the achievement and implementation of several SDGs: SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Biodegradable plastics help meet the SDG 12 target related to waste reduction and hazardous material management. SDG 14: Life Below Water. Biodegradable plastics can reduce the impact of plastic waste on marine ecosystems and promote environmental health. SDG 15: Life on Land. Biodegradable plastics can help reduce the impact of plastic waste on terrestrial ecosystems, such as reducing soil and air pollution and promoting environmental health. SDG 13: Climate Action. Biodegradable plastics can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and disposal of conventional plastics. SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. Research and development of biodegradable plastics can boost innovation and provide new opportunities for a more sustainable plastics processing industry.

UGM LECTURERS PARTICIPATE IN FGD ON GENDER ROLES IN PUBLIC SERVICE AT BBPSIK YOGYAKARTA

Tuesday (9/7), the Center for Standard Testing of Forestry Instruments (BBPSIK) held a Forum Discussion Group (FGD) on Gender Roles in Public Services at the BBPSIK Cendana Room Jl. Student Army Hall Km. 15, Sleman, Yogyakarta. Lecturer at the Faculty of Biology, Dwi Umi Siswanti, S.Sc., M.Sc. invited as special representatives from Gadjah Mada University together with a student, Delia Sawanda Syarifatullah to provide input regarding public services at BBPSIK. Dwi and several lecturers at UGM have routinely sent students to carry out Practical Work (KP) at BBPSIK in recent years so that they know BBPSIK’s service standards so far.

This FGD presented speakers Aan Eddy Antana, ST, M. Eng. from The Handicraft and Batik Center and Indiah Ratna Dewi, S.Si. from The Center for Standardization and Services for the Leather, Rubber and Plastic Industry (BBSPJI). Henri Supriyanto, S.Hut.T, MAP. present as an internal speaker. A total of 120 offline and online participants attended this FGD. In his speech, the Head of BBPSIK, Dwi Prabowo Yuga Suseno, S.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D, expressed his hope, “This FGD was held as a basis for implementing public services, to gain understanding between organizers and facility users regarding gender mainstreaming at BBPSIK”.

Aan conveyed the public service standards at The Handicrafts and Batik Center which have taken into account the excellence of men and women in public services. Women excel in the areas of good interaction and empathic value while men excel in problem-solving and systemization and competitive value. In this arena, efforts are made to balance the ratio between men and women in this hall. Similar to Aan’s presentation, Indiah said that there were efforts to achieve a balanced male-to-female ratio in her agency as well as efforts to internalize gender mainstreaming in her center. “Currently we should be proud, the Gender Development Index in Yogyakarta has reached 96.9%,” said Indiah. Henri as a resource person from BBPSIK conveyed BBPSIK’s vision to internalize public services based on gender equality. “We learn from these two agencies and want to hear input from the invitees who are stakeholders, partners, and users of our services,” said Hendri in his presentation.

The speaker’s presentation was followed by an interactive discussion from the audience. Dwi conveyed his experience of sending KP students to BBPSIK and asked about the possibility of sending KP students to the Crafts and Batik Center and BBSPJI. “In 2024, the KP agenda at our faculty will be held between July and August, how will BBPSIK and these two centers anticipate the large number of KP enthusiasts in this institution,” asked Dwi in the forum. Henri, Aan, and Indiah answered in the same way that these three bodies would accept practical work students in their institutions with open arms. Still they needed to consider the registration time, which should be six months before inplementing of the KP. “It will be straightforward  for us to allocate students to each lab if you are willing to send us a letter six months before the implementation of the KP,” Henri expressed his hope. “We will add student supervisors in each of our labs so that the quota can increase every year for KP,” said Aan, providing a solution.

This FGD ended with the signing of the FGD Minutes. Dwi, representing UGM and BBPSIK service user, had the honor of signing the A Post Event Report and was also responsible for overseeing the implementation of gender equality-based public services at BBPSIK.

This activity is a manifestation of the SDGs Healthy and Prosperous Life (SDGs 3), Gender Equality (SDGs 5), Reducing Inequalities (SDGs 10), and Partnerships to Achieve Goals (SDGs 17). (DUS)

 

Student Team From Gadjah Mada University Faculty of Biology Wins 3rd Place in CEWAMA Research Competition

Yogyakarta, July 1, 2024 – A team of students from the Faculty of Biology at Gadjah Mada University has achieved remarkable success by winning 3rd place in the CEWAMA Research Competition organized by the Indonesian Aviation Polytechnic Curug. This national competition ran from May 29 to June 25, 2024, for the scientific writing phase and concluded with final presentations on July 1, 2024.

The team, named “ALNOCO” (Algae Non Carbon), consists of K. William Hendri Panjaitan (class of 2021), K.H. Mahadhevy Ryrathna Vidhantyka (class of 2022), and Aqil Muhammad Hafiz (class of 2021). Under the guidance of Dr. Eng. Thoriq Teja Samudra, M.Sc., and Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, M.App.Sc., they presented a paper titled “INNOVATION OF POME AS A MICROALGAE (Neochloris oleoabundans) SUBSTRATE FOR DIVERSIFICATION OF RENEWABLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AIRCRAFT FUEL DERIVATIVES.”

In their work, the ALNOCO team addressed the issue of alternative bioavtur from microalgae biomass by utilizing waste POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent) as a growth substrate. The biomass of N. oleoabundans, which is rich in lipid content, can be used as an environmentally friendly and renewable alternative for aircraft fuel. The growth and lipid content of N. oleoabundans are influenced by various factors, including optimal nutritional content (N:P:C). POME waste provides the necessary N:P:C levels for N. oleoabundans to grow and accumulate lipids in its cells.

This innovation has significant potential to support environmentally friendly bioavtur production before 2030, with the support of all parties involved in the next stages of testing, including preparing a roadmap for commercialization, However, further discussion is needed to optimize the growth of microalgae in POME waste and extract lipids for making aircraft fuel that minimally pollutes the air. Additionally, the use of microalgae and POME as alternative options has been proven to be safe to process, fulfilling the need for a clean energy transportation system, which will positively impact the environment.

The competition was attended by 56 teams from various universities across Indonesia. The achievements of the ALNOCO team demonstrate their commitment to developing innovative and applicable research. This success also showcases the Faculty of Biology at Gadjah Mada University’s ongoing efforts to contribute to the development of sustainable science and technology, aligning with UGM’s SDGs goals in the renewable energy field.

Students Of The Faculty Of Biology, UGM Conduct Socialization On Healthy Living Patterns And Nutritional Food Consumption Patterns In Pajangan Hamlet, Wedomartani, Ngemplak, Sleman

The Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) – Community Service Team from Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, led by Dr. Ardaning Nuriliani S.Si., M.Kes. with team members Anida Safriyani, Nailah Aufa Khansa, Rizquita Brillianti, and Safia Putri Sakanti (Undergraduate student of Faculty of Biology, 2021) carried out activities to improve family health in Pajangan Hamlet, Wedomartani, Ngemplak, Sleman. This program was implemented under collaboration with a partner from the Takmir of the Jami’ Darussalam Mosque, Mr. Gunardi S.Si. The program was started with a quetionnaire of the healthy lifestyle of Pajangan Hamlet residents and socialization of healthy livestyles. Completing the questionnaire was carried out on 4 – 8 May 2024 by around 57 residents of Pajangan Hamlet from 8 years to 72 years old.

Furthermore, on June 9 2024, our MBKM team conducted socialization entitled “Healthy Lifestyles and Nutritious Food Consumption Patterns”. This activity took place at the Jami’ Darussalam Mosque and was attended by around 17 residents of Pajangan Hamlet. In this activity, our team explained about the healthy lifestyles and the importance of nutrient balance for the body. We also explained the impacts of inbalance nutrient intake and how to prevent it. When conducting socialization, we displayed the results of the healthy lifestyle questionnaire that has been carried out previously. The residents were very enthusiastic in asking various questions and discussions related to the material presented. At the end of the activity, our team gave appreciation to residents who actively participated in the discussion.

Our MBKM team hopes that this activity can increase the knowledge of the residents of Pajangan Hamlet, Wedomartani, Ngemplak, Sleman, so that they can adopt a healthy lifestyle and consume balanced nutritious food in their daily lives and that they can encourage prosperity aas well as improve their standard of living and health.

Garden Development and Arrangement of the Punthuk Kepuh Tourism Area through the PkM-MBKM Program

Currently, tourism continues to grow and has become a mainstay for local communities. One of the significant potentials that is easy to develop is the utilization of natural landscapes with tourism potential. Gunungkidul Regency is an area dominated by karst landscapes with various tourism potentials such as beaches, caves, hills, waterfalls, mountains, historical sites, and cultural tourism. One of the potential natural tourism areas with a promising landscape topography is in Kathongan Village, Nglipar, particularly Punthuk Kepuh Area.

Punthuk Kepuh offers the best sunrise view surrounded by karst hills. Additionally, there are facilities like playgrounds, camping sites, glamping, joglos, prayer rooms, and parks. However, the soil conditions and characteristics at Punthuk Kepuh make it challenging to arrange shading plants and develop gardens. Therefore, the development and arrangement of gardens is necessary, which is the objective of the Community Service (PkM) activity based on the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program.

To arrange the garden in the Punthuk Kepuh area, PkM-MBKM activity was conducted on Saturday and Sunday, June 1-2, 2024. The landscape architecture discussion and garden arrangement were led by Anggi Nada, Tsaabita Roona, and Purwi Anis under the guidance of Dr. Wiko Arif Wibowo S.Si., in collaboration with the Garden Management program from the Kelompok Studi Arsitektur Taman (KSAT). The target of this service program is the Kelompok Sadar Wisata Punthuk Kepuh (POKDARWIS) which was catalyzed together with the KSAT team.

The garden-making process took two days. On the first day, a land survey and design adjustments were carried out on three garden sites, followed by the land clearing and execution process. The garden design process was then presented to community and POKDARWIS to get feedback and suggestions from the community’s perspective. On the second day, the finalization of the garden construction and the closing of the activity were conducted.

The first phase of the garden arrangement activity went smoothly and was very well received by the community, especially POKDARWIS. Mujiyono, the chairman of POKDARWIS, welcomed the PkM-MBKM collaboration to enhance the aesthetic value and support efforts to advance tourism in Punthuk Kepuh. Furthermore, this activity is expected to provide hands-on practical experience while enhancing the social spirit of the students involved, contributing to community benefits. As the supervising lecturer and proposer of PkM-MBKM, Dr. Wiko Arif Wibowo S.Si. stated that this program is UGM’s effort to contribute to SDG 15 regarding sustainable land ecosystem management and benefit the community.

PkM MBKM Faculty of Biology UGM 2024: Empowering the Community of Kepuh Kulon RT 001, Wirokerten, Banguntapan, Bantul Through Utilizing Limited Land with Hydroponic Technology for Food Independence (Phase I)

The Community Service Team – Independent Learning Independent Campus (PkM-MBKM) of the Faculty of Biology UGM for the year 2024, chaired by Rina Sri Kasiamdari, Ph.D., has successfully conducted a series of Community Service activities at Kepuh Kulon RT 001, Wirokerten, Banguntapan, Bantul. The MBKM PKM program supports SDG 1 No Poverty, SDG 2 No Hunger, SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production. The team, consisting of four students, namely Nurindah Musarofah, Hasna Nabila Kusumastuti, Cindy Adisty Rudi Ananda Putri, and Amalia Rizky Fauzi, focused on the theme of simple hydroponic cultivation technology to enhance community food independence. This program is designed to span two semesters. On the even semester, PkM-MBKM activities were conducted on Sunday, May 5, 2024, from 09:00 to 12:00 WIB at the residence of Mr. Zamzuri, the Head of RT 001 Kepuh Kulon. The activities included socialization and practical demonstrations of simple hydroponic cultivation utilizing a wick system. The event was warmly received by 22 residents of RT 001 Kepuh Kulon, as well as Mr. Sunartana, the Head of the Kepuh Kulon Hamlet. In his address, Mr. Sunartana expressed his hope that this program would evolve into a sustainable initiative to address local challenges, urging community members to support its continuity. Mrs. Rina emphasized that the program aims to bolster community food independence by maximizing limited land resources through hydroponic cultivation and encouraged residents to adopt hydroponic practices at their homes.

Socialization activities included providing information on the concept and benefits of hydroponics, suitable plant species for hydroponic cultivation, various hydroponic techniques, types of fertilizers and equipment, and procedures for implementing wick system hydroponics. The wick system was chosen for its simplicity, minimal requirement of tools and materials, and low maintenance costs. During the practical session, residents were divided into four groups of 6-8 individuals, each accompanied by a student mentor to facilitate independent practice. Participants engaged in activities such as seed selection, planting in rockwool, preparation of nutrient solutions, and transplanting seedlings. It is hoped that the residents’ enthusiasm and newly acquired skills will contribute to the sustainability of the program. Additionally, the PkM-MBKM team distributed sets of hydroponic tools to enable residents to continue practicing hydroponic cultivation at home. The PkM-MBKM program will be continued in the odd semester Academic Year 2024/2025 in September with activities to process hydroponic harvests into products that can be used for community food independence.

Four UGM Biology Faculty Students Have the Opportunity to Study Abroad through the Indonesian International Student Mobility (IISMA) Program in 2024

A total of four students from the UGM Faculty of Biology had the opportunity to be accepted into the Indonesian International Student Mobility (IISMA) program in 2024. They are Abigail Yemima (Class of 2021) who was accepted at the University of Glasgow, Felix Luman Shanahan (IUP Class of 2022) who will study at the University of Groningen, Maxmillian Melvin (IUP Class of 2022) at the University of Pennsylvania, and Tan Rendy (Class of 2022) who will be having the opportunity to study at the University of British Columbia.

Abigail Yemima expressed her gratitude for being accepted into the IISMA program. At first she didn’t feel confident and wasn’t sure she would be accepted. But her efforts paid off. “I felt that this was a kickstart into a brand new chapter of my life and opened the door to many new opportunities,” said Abigail. She is very grateful and excited to have been accepted at the University of Glasgow and will make the most of it. The University of Glasgow itself is a top university offering a variety of courses, ranging from STEM to Arts and Humanities, which supports interdisciplinarity for exchange students alike. Being a member of the Russell Group, the University of Glasgow also focuses on research allowing me to connect with researchers and educators with similar interests. “I have high hopes that the supplementary courses I take and my effort to expand my network will lay the groundwork for a post-graduate degree or my career in the future”, she hopes.

Meanwhile, Tan Rendy stated that months of preparation had finally paid off when he received the announcement. Being an IISMA awardee, it definitely still feels surreal as well as exciting. “My huge gratitude to myself and those who have supported me to reach this point. One down, more to go!”, he said. For him University of British Columbia is special. Actually, it was not even on his list. But once he got to its page and did more research, he just knew what he was looking for. University of British Columbia is the one.

Maxmillian Melvin also expressed his joy and honor at being selected as one of the IISMA participants. Max, his nickname, is excited to meet and collaborate with other colleagues and experience new things abroad. “I chose University of Pennsylvania because of its renowned reputation in research which offers a ton of opportunities and resources. Furthermore, University of Pennsylvania has a diverse community that fosters innovation and interdisciplinary learning,” he said firmly.

Furthermore, Felix Luman Shanahan firmly stated that the University of Groningen was his choice. “I opted for the University of Groningen as my choice for IISMA because of its renowned reputation in economics and business studies. I have a goal to establish a sustainable biology-based business in the future, and I believe that the knowledge and skills I acquire at the University of Groningen will assist me in achieving this goal”, said Felix. According to him, apart from excellent economics and business programs, the University of Groningen has a large international student community which offers excellent opportunities to expand your network and connect with people from all over the world. “I am extremely grateful and thrilled to become an IISMA awardee, and I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported me on this journey— my friends, lecturers, and my family”, he concluded.

Congratulations to the students receiving the Indonesian International Student Mobility (IISMA) program in 2024! Hopefully this program will further increase student experience and knowledge specifically and can support the achievement of point 4 of the SDGs related to Quality Education.

SITH ITB Benchmarking Study to Biology UGM: Strengthening Collaboration in the Academic Field

Yogyakarta, March 1 2024 – Today, the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) warmly welcomed a benchmarking study visit from the School of Life Sciences and Technology (SITH) Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) which took place from 13.00 to 16.00 WIB in the KPTU courtroom Faculty of Biology UGM.

This event is part of an effort to deepen understanding of the Master’s and Doctoral program curriculum at the Faculty of Biology UGM. In his speech, the Dean of the Faculty of Biology UGM, Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc., expressed his sincere appreciation for the visit of the team from ITB. He also expressed the hope that cooperation between the two institutions would become closer, especially in efforts to improve the quality of education holistically.

Also attending this event was the Dean of the Faculty of Biology UGM, Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, M.Sc. as Deputy Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Slamet Widiyanto, M.Sc. as Deputy Dean for Asset Finance and Human Resources, Abdul Razaq Chasani, Ph.D. as Head of the Department, Dr.rer.nat Andhika Puspito N, M.Sc. as Head of the Masters Study Program, Prof. Dr. Endah Retnanigrum, M.Eng. as Head of the Doctoral Study Program at the Faculty of Biology UGM and Emi Dwi Suyanti, M.Sc. as Coordinator Academic and Student Affairs.

Meanwhile, the team from ITB who took part in this visit consisted of Dr. Isty Adhitya Purwasena, M.Si., Dr. Iriawati, Sartika Indah Amalia Sudiarto, Ph.D., and Dr. Fenryco Pratama, M.Sc.

This meeting is not only a means to exchange information and experiences, but is also a concrete step in supporting the achievement of SDGs point 4, it’s an efforts to realize quality education in Indonesia.
