In order to establish cooperation in the academic field and continue the program to admit foreign students from Libya to the Faculty of Biology, Gadjah Mada University, the Faculty of Biology UGM conducted a visit and short meeting with the Libyan Ambassador for Indonesia in Jakarta. This meeting was held on Wednesday 15 November 2023 by the Dean Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc. together with Sukirno, S.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. at the Libyan Embassy to Indonesia at Jl. Patra Kuningan XII, RT.6/RW.4, Kuningan, Setiabudi District, Jakarta 12950.

On this occasion, His Excellency Ambassador H.E Mr. Zakarya MM El Maghrabi, Mrs. Ahlam S Y Khalifa, and Mr. Abdulhadi M.A. Abourweeshah was pleased to receive the delegation from the Faculty of Biology UGM. Prof. Budi delivered a brief introduction about the Faculty of Biology UGM and our desire to build collaboration in the academic field with Libyan universities, especially to accept students from Libya for further studies at UGM. He said that there were 2 alumni of master’s program students from Libya, namely Mr. Hamzah Saad Ali Al Turki and Mrs. Amna Mohamed Abdulhafith Marie who did very well in the program.

In his speech, H.E Mr. Zakarya MM El Maghrabi said that he agreed to open formal cooperation and would synergize with the Libyan government and universities in Libya. Until now, Libya and Indonesia’s educational cooperation programs which are still limited to the fields of da’wah and Islamic studies. Opportunities for educational collaboration in the field of science will be very interesting and promising.

It is hoped that this discussion will become a bridge to increase the collaboration network between Gadjah Mada University, especially the Faculty of Biology, with universities in Libya. In addition, this collaboration is in line with the Faculty of Biology’s commitment to increasing cooperation in the context of international recognition in accordance with its support for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 17) and improving the quality of inclusive and high-quality education (SDG 4) as well as competing with the best institutions worldwide.

The team of Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat – Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (PkM-MBKM) Faculty of Biology UGM 2023 that chaired by Rina Sri Kasiamdari, Ph.D. and involved two students, namely Galuh Kirana Mahadewi and Laila Uswatun Chasanah, carried out again a series of Community Service activities in Kepuh Kulon RT 001, Wirokerten, Banguntapan, Bantul. This activity is a continuity of the PkM-MBKM activities that have been carried out previously from February to June 2023.

The first activity of this PkM MBKM phase II was held on Sunday, October 8^th 2023 from 09.00 to 11.00 WIB at the house of the neighborhood head of Kepuh Kulon RT 001, Mr. Zamzuri, and attended by 18 people of Kepuh Kulon RT 001. The activity on that day was packaging the compost and eco enzymes that had been made previously. First of all, Galuh and Laila gave a short explanation and demonstration about how to harvest and package the compost and eco enzyme. The compost was harvested by dried it for a while. After that, the compost could be packaged in a customized plastic ziplock. Unlike the compost, eco enzymes must be filtered between the fruits that are used and the water and then packaged in 250 mL bottles as much as 60 bottles. The compost that have been made is used for plant fertilization, while the eco enzyme is used for washing dishes, cleaning floors, repelling pests, cleaning vegetables and fruit from pests, and cleaning glass or glass surfaces. The compost and eco enzymes that are already packed and labeled are given to the Head of Wirokerten village and the Head of Hamlet. Hopefully, the skills of the women residents of Kepuh Kulon RT 001 in making compost and eco enzymes can become a reference in managing daily household waste, so that they can reduce the accumulation of waste and can make household waste more useful.

The second activity was about utilising used cooking oil (UCO) that become household waste into aromatherapy candles. It was held on Sunday, October 29^th 2023 from 09.00 to 12.30 WIB at the house of the neighborhood head of RT 001 Kepuh Kulon, Mr. Zamzuri, and attended by 18 people of Kepuh Kulon RT 001. In this activity, the used cooking oil was made into solid aromatherapy candles and liquid aromatherapy candles. Tools and materials that used for making solid aromatherapy candles were used candle wick, wood holder, tea filter, plastic basin, pan, measuring cup, stove, cement pot, saucepan, cutting board, knife, spoon, used cooking oil, stearic acid, crayon, and essential oil, whereas the tools and materials that used for making liquid aromatherapy candles were glass cup, tissue paper, the cover of pudding cup, five different food colouring, water, used cooking oil, and essential oil. During the practice of making aromatherapy candles, we produced 100 solid aromatherapy candles and 25 liquid aromatherapy candles. All of them were distributed and could be used by the residents of Kepuh Kulon RT 001. Hopefully, the utilisation of UCO into aromatherapy candle could be one of the solution for reducing oil waste that can cause an environmental pollution and also could be a micro/small/medium enterprises (MSMEs) business idea for Kepuh Kulon RT 001 residents. The aromatherapy candles also distributed to the Head of the Hamlet, and the Head of Wirokerten Village. It is hoped that this PkM-MBKM program can provide new knowledge for Kepuh Kulon RT 001 residents in processing and utilizing household waste into more useful products.

The Indonesian Student Research Olympiad / Olimpiade Penelitian Siswa Indonesia (OPSI), is one of the routine activities organized by the National Achievement Center, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Indonesia. This activity aims to develop Indonesian people with creative and innovative characters. Therefore, OPSI is held for Senior High School students and its equivalent education levels to be able to conduct and develop their interests, ideas, and innovative abilities in learning through research activity. Through this activity, students are required to develop critical and creative thinking, as well as scientific skills.

In 2023, one of the schools that have the opportunity to participate in this competition is Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta High School with team leader Dhimpna Gendhis Wahyu Pawestri with members Vega, school supervisor Anastasia Ratna Dwiyanti, S.Pd., student supervisor Tabitha Andrea Putri (student of Faculty of Veterinary, Universitas Gadjah Mada), as well as supervisor from the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Dr. Ardaning Nuriliani, S.Sc., M.Kes. This team carried out research entitled “Testing the Angiogenesis Effect of Kencana Ungu Leaf Extract (Ruellia tuberosa L.) on the Chorioallantoic Membrane (CAM) of Chicken Egg Embryos in Inhibiting Cancer Cell Growth”. This research was carried out in June – October 2023. Even though the team did not succeed in advancing to the final stage, there were many valuable lessons that the students gained while taking part in this activity, including understanding better how to conduct the research properly and correctly, how to develop teamwork skill, how to communicate effectively, and how to prepare a good and correct scientific report. (SDGs 4).

Yogyakarta, 27 October 2023 – The 8th International Conference of Biological Science (ICBS) Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada was held again via hybrid after the previous successful event in 2021. With the theme “Leveraging Biodiversity to Support Green Economy and Climate Resilience”, ICBS was held in collaboration with Tun Hussein Onn University Malaysia (UTHM) and the Indonesian Biology Consortium (KOBI) for two days, 27 and 28 October 2023, at the Grand Ballroom of the Eastparc Hotel Yogyakarta. This conference is part of the Faculty of Biology UGM commitment to its contribution to sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The biennial conference began with a traditional dance performance “Lintang Kemukus” performed by five female students from the Faculty of Biology UGM Executive Board of Postgraduate Student. The Lintang Kemukus Dance is a traditional dance from Banyuwangi, East Java which expresses the charm of women that radiates from the beauty of their souls and is not susceptible to being weathered and lost by changing times.

“This year’s ICBS accomodated 7 topics and received more than 150 articles from the USA, India, Australia, Mexico, Malaysia, and Indonesia which were presented offline and online,” said Dr. Miftahul Ilmi, M.Si., Chair of the Committee for the 8th International Conference of Biological Science in his speech Friday (27/10). The topics include biosystematics, functional biology, biomedical, bioinformatics, genetics, bio-nanotechnology and bioengineering. Dr. Ilmi also said that the selected articles will be published in proceedings and partner journals including BIO Web of Conferences, Journal of Tropical Biodiversity and Biotechnology (JTBB), and Indonesian Journal of Biotechnology (IJBioTech) which have been indexed by Scopus and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).

Prof. Dr. Mirwan Ushada, STP., M.App.Life.Sc., Director of Research at UGM was also present at the opening of ICBS 2023. He conveyed the urgency of preserving biodiversity and how it is closely related to food security and the medical world. In his speech, Prof. Mirwan also revealed the contribution of technology in the development of science through Artificial Intelligence (AI). He hopes that this conference can become a forum for gathering and sharing knowledge and ideas to create a sustainable future.

“This conference aims to be a gathering place for scientists, policy makers and academics to share various information and experiences in the realization of sustainable science, especially understanding biodiversity conservation and resilience to current climate change,” Prof. Dr. Ir. Sri Suning Kusumawardani, S.T., M.T., Director of Learning and Student Affairs, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, then gave his welcoming speech for ICBS 2023.

“Through this conference, we hope to be able to explore deeply how to use biodiversity to build a sustainable economy and build resilience to climate change. We also hope that all participants can contribute to discussions, collaboration and share insights in understanding related to biodiversity conservation and utilization,” said Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc. in his speech. Together with Prof. Dr. Satyawan Pudyatmoko from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Mirwan, and Dr. Eko as Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration and Alumni Affairs, Prof. Budi opened the conference by striking the gong three times.

The keynote speaker at the 8th International Conference of Biological Science this time was delivered by Prof. Dr. Satyawan Pudyatmoko, Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation, Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia. Prof. Satyawan conveyed how humans contribute significantly to the earth’s climate conditions and anthropogenic climate change also affects the structure and function of ecosystems which indirectly causes a decline in human welfare. He highlighted the importance of establishing conservation areas and land protection as well as biodiversity management as important steps to address climate change.

Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Muhammad Abdul Latiff from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, was also invited to be a speaker at ICBS this time. He gave a presentation entitled “Primate-Based Tourism: Fostering Biodiversity Conservation and Empowering local Communities through Green Economy”. He highlighted the importance of synergy between primate-based tourism and community-based conservation (CBC), which is an effort to increase conservation as well as empower local communities for sustainable development.

The next keynote speaker is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Michael Sauer, Head of Department of Biotechnology OMV AG from the University of Natural Resources and Life Science, BOKU, Austria. Dr. Michael presented on microbial culture for sustainable chemical production. Dr. Michael highlighted the limitations in fuel and chemical production due to limited resources and climate change. A microbial fermentation process that converts plant biomass and waste as a source of chemical production.

The 8th International Conference of Biological Science is expected to become a forum for communication and sharing for researchers to collaborate and innovate to develop biodiversity-based sustainable development. This is in line with contributions to increasing science and inclusive education (SDG 4), especially in developing biodiversity conservation (SDG 14 and 15) and handling climate change (SDG 13) through sustainable partnerships (SDG 17).

Yogyakarta, October 26, 2023 – A delegation from the Faculty of Biology at Universitas Gadjah Mada, led by Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, and Dr. Slamet Widiyanto, Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources, has undertaken a highly productive visit to two renowned universities in Thailand: Kasetsart University and Prince of Songkla University. The purpose of this visit was to identify opportunities for collaboration in education and research, with a focus on student exchanges, research cooperation, double degree programs, and other forms of collaboration.

The visit began at Kasetsart University, where the delegation toured state-of-the-art research facilities. This initial step was crucial in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the research capabilities at Kasetsart University and exploring potential research collaboration opportunities between the two institutions.The discussions covered collaborative plans that encompass student exchanges and potential research cooperation, which promise significant benefits for both institutions.

During the visit at The Prince of Songkla University, the delegation also had the opportunity to visit research laboratories and The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum, and also a discussions regarding student mobility programs, joint supervision, and research collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pimonsri Mittraparp-Arthorn, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and International Relations, and Mrs. Jittima Phosena from the International Cooperation and Public Relations, both parties agreed to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that will serve as the foundation for closer collaboration between the Faculty of Biology at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Kasetsart University, and Prince of Songkla University. This visit represents the strong commitment of the Faculty of Biology at Universitas Gadjah Mada to strengthen international interinstitutional relationships and enhance the quality of education and research. This collaboration is expected to deliver substantial benefits to all parties involved.

On Sunday, October 15^th, 2023, the team of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka-Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (MBKM-PkM) 2023 Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, conducted another socialization activity for the residents in Pajangan, Wedomartani, Ngemplak, Sleman, Yogyakarta, regarding the production of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) and eco-enzyme. This socialization was organized to encourage the community to manage organic waste into something beneficial, such as liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) and eco-enzyme. The speakers for this socialization were the MBKM-PkM 2023 team, consisting of five undergraduate students of Faculty of Biology, Unviersitas Gadjah Mada, class of 2020, they were Arba’ Ramadhani Artik, Arneta Yuvita, Ester Dewanti Yovita Wardani, Fadiah Sri Rahayu, and Zidni Meirizka Utami, under supervision Dr. Ardaning Nuriliani, S.Si., M.Kes. and the partner mentor Ms. Nurini Aru Sudarsi. The MBKM-PkM 2023 team conducted the socialization with the theme “Caring for the Earth Starts from Our Kitchen.” This theme included two main topics: liquid organic fertilizer and eco-enzyme. The first topic covered the importance of macro and micro nutrients for plants, the definition of organic and inorganic fertilizers, the differences between organic and inorganic fertilizers (chemical), the advantages and disadvantages of organic and inorganic fertilizers, the production process of liquid organic fertilizer, as well as its application. The second topic explained the concept of eco-enzyme, its advantages and disadvantages, its benefits, the production process of Eco-enzyme, as well as its application.

Effective management of organic waste is crucial at present, given the issues related to the limited space for waste disposal at the Piyungan Final Disposal Site in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Producing liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) and eco-enzyme is one way to manage organic waste such as food scraps, vegetable waste, fruit waste, and leaves, turning them into something beneficial for the environment. Liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) can be used to nurture plants without worrying about chemical effects on them. Meanwhile, eco-enzyme can serve not only as a fertilizer component but also as a detergent or cleanser and pest control for plants. The production of LOF and Eco-enzyme doesn’t require significant costs; it mainly relies on organic waste from the kitchen, water, molasses solution (brown sugar, palm sugar, coconut sugar), and EM4 solution.

This socialization received a positive response and enthusiasm from the residents of Pajangan Hamlet who actively participated in the discussion sessions with the speakers. It is hoped that the socialization by the MBKM-PkM 2023 team will raise awareness and engagement, particularly among the residents of Pajangan Hamlet, in environmentally friendly practices by managing kitchen and organic waste and turning them into something useful for the environment. (SDGs 3).

Canberra, 16 October 2023 –Faculty of Biology UGM continues to expand its network in the international stage in order to increase recognition and collaboration with various world institutions, one of which is the Australian National University (ANU). Ranked 34^th in the world’s best universities according to the QS World Ranking, ANU is one of the universities with the highest number of Nobel award recipients in the world. One of them is Prof. Brian Schmidt from ANU’s College of Science won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011 for his discovery of the accelerated expansion of the universe. ANU offers learning programs on the best campus with leading facilities, and is located in the heart of the national capital, Canberra, which holds the title of the 5^th healthiest city in the world.

Collaboration between the Faculty of Biology UGM and ANU, especially the College of Science, has been established since 2017 through the Double Degree Program collaboration for bachelor’s and master’s programs and the Faculty of Biology has succeeded in sending 2 undergraduate students, namely Vanessa Wijaya and Sabut Kharisona, to the Double Degree Program at the School of Biology, College of Science, ANU. As a follow-up to this collaboration, the Faculty of Biology Dean’s Team consisting of Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc. as Dean and Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, M.App.Sc. as Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration and Alumni Affairs, returned to visit ANU after their previous visit, last August 2017.

Collaborative discussions were held with the Dean of the ANU College of Science, Prof. Kiaran Kirk together with Prof. Vincent Craig from the Research School of Physics, Prof. Maja Adamska as Head of Biology Teaching and Learning Center and Dr. Sarah Kachovich as Program Manager of the Australian and New Zealand International Ocean Discovery Program Consortium of ANU. The scope of collaboration discussed includes continuing previous collaboration by improving its quality, one of which is by carrying out joint research and publication collaborations, developing and improving the quality of lecturers and students to study at ANU, implementing student and staff mobility including student exchanges both through the IISMA and independent programs as well as Visiting Professor and keynote/invited speakers for lectures, International Conferences (ICBS) in 2025 and International Summer Course (ISC) in 2024, as well as continuing the Double Degree Program for undergraduate (S1) and Postgraduate (S2 and S3) programs for the Double Degree Program in the School of Biology, College of Science ANU. The Double Degree Postgraduate Program collaboration between the Faculty of Biology UGM and ANU in 2023 is also supported by LPDP scholarships.

This visit is a great step by the Faculty of Biology to improve the quality of education by collaborating with partners at the international level as well as building good relationships, especially with the College of Science, Australian National University, which has been established since 2017. In addition, this collaboration is a commitment of the Faculty of Biology UGM in supports sustainable development and is in line with sustainable development targets (SDGs), namely good quality education (SDGs 4) and revitalization of global partnerships (SDGs 17).

On Sunday, 8th October 2023, the Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat – Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (PkM-MBKM) Faculty of Biology, UGM 2023, 5 undergraduate students of Faculty of Biology, UGM class of 2020, namely Arba’ Ramadhani Artik, Arneta Yuvita, Ester Dewanti Yovita Wardani, Fadiah Sri Rahayu, and Zidni Meirizka Utami supervised by Dr. Ardaning Nuriliani, S.Si., M.Kes. and Ms. Nurini Aru Sudarsi as the partner mentor have carried out the socialization activities to the residents in Pajangan, Wedomartani Village, Ngemplak, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The theme of the socialization was “Improving the Community’s through Optimizing of Vacant Land”. This program aims to engage the community to improve the economic condition of the family by utilizing vacant land in the yard area of the house to plant vegetables, fruits, herbs, and several medicine and functional plants or also called “TOGA”. In this activity, we invited Mr. Panggih Dwi Atmojo, S.T. as a speaker. He is an alumnus of the Faculty of Engineering, UGM who is currently active as an agro economic practitioner as well as the founder and owner of Agro Edukasi Caping Merapi Yogyakarta which is located at Kenayan, Wedomartani, Ngemplak, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region. The given presentation discussed topics about food gardening, including vegetable garden cultivation, as well as rising fish, chickens, and other small livestock to meet daily food needs. He also discussed about urban farming, which is the method of farming in the city or on limited land. In addition, the speaker also emphasized that the use of vacant land as a food garden can provide various other benefits, such as the community can provide traditional medicine independently, add decoration to the garden, provide refreshing activities through gardening, obtain healthier food that is free from chemical fertilizers, and produce biofertilizer which can be obtained through composting, eco lindi, and manure systems. This can also serve to overcome the problem of handling organic waste.

This socialization was attended by around 20 residents and received a very positive response, even some residents were very enthusiastic and directly involved in the discussion session together with the speakers.

Yogyakarta – 31 August 2023 The Faculty of Biology held an online discussion with James Cook University. The discussion was attended by colleagues from James Cook University, Campus Singapore. There are Cassandra Lee as Director, Recruitment and Partnerships, Ben Ng as Assistant Manager in International Management, Shelly Wang as Senior Regional Manager (Europe, Central Asia and Others), and Assoc. Prof. Roberto Dillon as Academic Head for the School of Science and Technology James Cook University Singapore. From the Faculty of Biology attended by Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, M.App.Sc. as Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration and Alumni Affairs, Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, M.Sc. as Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Sukirno, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. as Head of the Undergraduate Study Program, and Tyas Iksan Hikmawan, M.Sc., Ph.D. as Head of the International Affairs Office, Faculty of Biology, UGM.

Dr. Eko as Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration and Alumni Affairs of the Faculty of Biology, said that the discussion was a follow-up step from the previous discussion, which discussed the initiation of research collaboration and student exchange. Dr. Eko explained further about the International Undergraduate (IUP) program at the Faculty of Biology and the enthusiasm of students to be able to collaborate with James Cook University, especially their interest in marine biology. He also conveyed the initiation of double degree and joint supervision collaboration. Faculty of Biology itself has collaborated on a double degree with Australia National University and the University of Leeds and has collaborated on joint supervision with Boku University, Greifswald University, and L’Institut Agro Montpellier.

Assoc. Prof. Roberto Dillon expressed his appreciation for the collaboration initiative and explained the study programs at the James Cook University School of Science and Technology on the Singapore Campus that can be collaborated on. There are Bachelor of Business and Environmental Science and Bachelor of Science programs. He added the suitability of the program, especially the Bachelor of Science program with a background in the Faculty of Biology UGM and students’s study interests in marine biology.

Cassandra Lee then conveyed the need for curriculum mapping and further discussions, especially for collaborative student exchange, double degree and joint supervision supported by potential Indonesian government scholarships (LPDP) for master’s and doctoral programs. Cassandra hopes for flexible collaboration so that students can take collaborative work programs with James Cook University on the Australian Campus and the Singapore Campus as well. Shelly Wang and Ben Ng also added follow-up on curriculum matching together with Sukirno, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. as Head of the UGM Faculty of Biology Undergraduate Study Program for the overall collaboration plan.

Yogyakarta, August 8, 2023. The Faculty Biology Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) organized a Socialization Event for the Student Exchange Program to Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). This event aims to provide a comprehensive overview to students about the planned student exchange program, scheduled to take place in October at UTHM Malaysia.

The event was conducted virtually (Zoom meeting), starting from 1:00 PM to 2:15 PM WIB, and was directly moderated by Sukirno, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., the Chair of the Undergraduate Biology Program at UGM. More than 65 students from the 2021 batch, both regular and IUP (International Undergraduate Program), participated in the event. The socialization began with an address by Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, M.App.Sc., the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Alumni Affairs of the Faculty of Biology at UGM. In his speech, Dr. Eko highlighted several benefits of participating in the student exchange program, including academic experiences that would be recorded in the transcript of grades, enhancement of one’s CV portfolio for scholarships or job applications, the strengthening of international networks, and the experience of different cultures and ways of life, as students would need to learn and adapt to diverse cultural settings.

Dr. Furzani Pa’ee from UTHM Malaysia also conveyed his support for the event, expressing readiness to assist students from the Faculty of Biology at UGM who successfully pass the selection process and travel to UTHM in October.The event continued with a sharing session with Rajendra Regaputra (IUP 2020) and Adiva Aphrodita (REG 2020). They discussed the facilities they had access to during their time at UTHM, engaging academic journeys, and the enhancement of soft skills gained through activities at UTHM.

The Faculty of Biology at UGM is committed to providing valuable opportunities for its students to develop academic potential, leadership skills, and a deeper understanding of cultural diversity through the student exchange program. The Faculty hopes that many Biology students will take advantage of this opportunity and join the Student Exchange program.
