Presenting Spirulina sp. and Yucca schidigera as Feed Additives, UGM Biology and Animal Science Students Win Bronze Medal in National Essay Competition

AchivementsHeadlineNews Release Monday, 13 May 2024

Undergraduate students from the Faculty of Biology made another achievement by winning a bronze medal in the National Essay Competition “Soedirman Event of Animal Husbandry 7.0” held on May 4-5, 2024. The team, consisting of Muhammad Syahrul Firdaus (Biology 2022), Annisa Nur Baety (Biology 2022), and Dzakiyyah (Animal Science 2023), under the guidance of Moh. Sofi’ul Anam, S.Pt., M.Sc. This national competition was organized by the Research and Development Unit of Animal Husbandry (UP3) at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, with the theme “Innovation and Creativity of Gen Z in Preventing Global Boiling Through Enhancing Climate Resilience for a Faster Recovery and Stronger Indonesia.”
The competition involved several stages, including proposal submission, preparation for presentation, and presentations before a panel of judges.

The team focused on the animal husbandry subtheme with their essay titled “The Potential of Spirulina sp. and Yucca schidigera Extracts as Feed Additives to Reduce Methane Emissions in Ruminant Livestock.” This innovation was driven by the increasing global temperatures, partly due to rising methane emissions from the livestock sector. Global warming can degrade feed quality, reduce livestock productivity, and cause diseases and death in livestock. To address these issues, the team proposed an innovative feed additive combining Spirulina sp. and Yucca schidigera. Spirulina sp. is a filamentous microalga containing 50-70% protein and 11-18% tannins, while Yucca schidigera is a plant adapted to extreme environments, containing 30-60% saponins. Using these two ingredients as feed additives, can meet livestock nutritional needs, reduce methanogen and protozoa populations in the rumen, decrease methane emissions, improve feed efficiency, and maintain livestock productivity and health.

This innovation is expected to provide a solution to the livestock sector’s challenges in Indonesia. Additionally, the team hopes that participating in this competition will inspire young Indonesians to develop creative ideas and contribute to sustainable development goals (SDGs). The Faculty of Biology UGM Initiates the Community Service Activity with the Wedomartani Tourism Awareness Group in Utilizing Animal Waste as Organic Fertilizer

Community ServiceHeadlineNews ReleaseWaste Management Tuesday, 7 May 2024

the Gebang Hamlet, Jetis, Wedomartani, Ngemplak, Sleman, is the inadequate management of animal waste (kohe) from cattle and goats. Faculty of Biology UGM through the Community Service – Independent Learning Independent Campus (PkM-MBKM) 2024 activity, led by Prof. Rarastoeti Pratiwi, with members Angela Puspa Larasati, Hanifa Nazaila F, and Nindya Dayita Hapsari held the meeting with the Wedomartani Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) team, represented by Joni Martono, Rujito, and Gatot Satriya, at Warung Goeboeg Pentjeng, Gebang. The meeting was to initiate the implementation of activities in managing and utilizing animal waste to produce organic fertilizer. Prior to the meeting, a discussion was held to align the perceptions between the head of Pokdarwis Wedomartani, Langgoso Aswin Poetra, and the head of the PkM MBKM team, especially regarding the implementation of activities. This activity supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially goals 13 and 17, Land Ecosystems and Partnerships to Achieve Goals.

The dominant livestock in the Gebang Hamlet are cattle and goats. Currently, animal waste is only collected near the pens, left to dry, and not optimally utilized. Additionally, there is an abundance of bamboo plants in the Gebang hamlet, which produce bamboo leaf litter. Bamboo leaf litter also serves as a medium for the growth of Trichoderma fungus, which has benefits as a biological fertilizer and biofungicide. The meeting discussed strategies for processing and producing organic fertilizer that can be utilized by farmers. It was agreed to process kohe, consisting of cattle and goat waste, along with bamboo leaf litter. This activity will begin with the production of prototype fertilizer products consisting of 6 variants. These prototype variants will be tested on chili plant seedlings to observe their growth. Subsequently, the selected variant of kohe fertilizer products, based on the best growth test results on chili plants, will be produced on a larger scale. To optimize the production of fertilizer on a larger scale, appropriate technology is needed using simple machinery equipment. The nutrient content and potential of these kohe fertilizer variants in supporting chili plant growth will also be tested.

To support the success of these activities, the head of the PkM MBKM team stated, “These activities will run smoothly if there is synergy between the PkM MBKM team and the team from Pokdarwis Wedomartani. To facilitate the activities, it can start by scheduling the implementation time at each stage, by writing down the activities in detail. Additionally, joint commitment is needed to achieve the goal of producing organic fertilizer from kohe waste in the Gebang Hamlet.” In the discussion, many suggestions and ideas were presented by Pokdarwis team members, which were well received by the MBKM students, including efforts to find references to support these ideas. The initiation meeting for these activities proceeded smoothly and optimistically.

KOBI Successfully Collected 11,137 Data on Indonesian Biodiversity

HeadlineNews Release Monday, 6 May 2024

Indonesia is one of the largest mega-biodiversity countries in the world, with a variety of rich species of flora, fauna and microbiotics that live in terrestrial, freshwater, wetland, coastal and marine ecosystems. However, its current condition continues to experience pressure from damage and the threat of extinction. On the other hand, the status, trends and impact of anthropocentric activities cannot be measured nationally.

To overcome this problem, the Indonesian Biology Consortium (KOBI), since 2019, has initiated the preparation of the Indonesian Biodiversity Index (IBI) through the MBKM-Biological Data Curator activity which was attended by 514 students from 104 universities in order to collect and compile biodiversity data in Indonesia. “We have succeeded in collecting data on 11,137 biodiversity,” said Chairman of the Indonesian Biology Consortium (KOBI) Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono told journalists Monday (29/4) in the context of socializing the results of the Consultation Seminar on the Results of the Analysis of the Indonesian Biodiversity Index, which took place in Jakarta, last Friday (26/4).

According to Budi, the analysis of the biodiversity index is through the development of the use of biodiversity big data technology to answer the current knowledge gap regarding biodiversity data. “The use of big data is specifically to measure the status, trends and impact of development activities on biodiversity in its habitat,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Biology UGM.

According to Budi, the collection of data on 11,137 biodiversity will then be analyzed in more depth by experts and curators who are competent in their fields. With the support of strong concept and model design, as well as the right composition of expertise and knowledge in the study team, we will be able to optimize new knowledge products from the use of big data. Budi said several Biology UGM lecturers involved in KOBI contributed to data collection. Apart from that, there is a Professor in the Statistics Study Program, FMIPA UGM, Prof. Dedi Rosadi is a member of the expert team for Biodiversity Index analysis.

Budi hopes that the results of the Indonesian Biodiversity Index (IBI) assessment can become a data reference and visual guide for practitioners in the field of biodiversity as well as a proposal for planning for the government in determining policies and making decisions by looking at the status and trends of biodiversity sustainability for ecosystems and nature in Indonesia. “We want the existence of IBI to provide index calculation results that are scientifically tested and can be jointly accounted for for credible environmental and biodiversity management in Indonesia,” he hoped.

WWF Indonesia Manager and member of the Indonesian Biodiversity Index research team, Barano Siswa Sulistyawan, Ph.D., stated that the curation of biodiversity data was based on data collection from 1975 to 2023. The data obtained was then carried out by a population census, population estimation, density including data converted from camera traps, abundance index, transport per business unit, biomass, samples, and representativeness.

“All data entered is stored and updated through the Indonesia Biodiversity Database server system, then geographical corrections are made to the location of the observation results according to the published report,” he said.
However, what is no less important, according to him, is correction of all input data to validate writing according to data categorization. This Faculty of Biology UGM alumnus explained that currently he is conducting a biodiversity index in categories per class, such as the analysis carried out for the actinopterygii, aves, mammals, reptiles and invertebrates.
